Planning my BSD start

    Hi all
    Im planning my foray into the BSD as myweught is now way to much, I’m pre diabetic and probably have metabolic syndrome. I’ve been reading the book and the recipe book but have a couple of questions.

    I detest coconut oil and rapeseed oil. I’m happy to use olive oil butthere are some recipes where a more neutral oil is used, any suggestions please? Can I use a drizzle of sesame oil for some recipes.

    Due to my disability and severe chronic pain I’m pretty much immobile but we are about to start swimming ( splashing around in the pool more likely) Any other suggestions fir gentle exercise. Going for walks is out as I can’t walk more than a couple of yards due to severe pain.

    I suffer from severe depression and am on antidepressants, does anyone gave any suggestions to stop my overnight snacking binges due to horrible insomnia.

    If anyone gas any suggestions, advice etc that helps at this stage of preparation please throw them my way.

    Welcome Bobbs, you are in a great place to reverse your pre-diabetes diagnosis but it is not without determination and effort on your part. This is a strict plan to improve health as well as lose weight and for that reason needs to be take seriously.
    Your question about sesame oil is that yes, it is quite okay to use it. I personally am not convinced on the science behind coconut oil and only use it for Asian dishes. Olive oil is not great for cooking with, especially if you have bought a good quality and expensive first pressing. There are cheaper version which are better for cooking. Just dont use vegetable oil, especially if they are a mixture as there is something not right about the (scientific jargon) type i.e. poly, mono, double helix – whatever.
    Exercise – for me swimming is the best thing you can do as it carries your body weight without causing damage. It also burns more calories than most other exercises unless you are running or knocking yourself out with something really difficult. Failing that, there are chair exercises you can do – you would have to google that, but just do what you can. The food you eat is more important than the exercise for losing weight.
    Cant help with the snacking except to plan for it and have a few calories available and only snack on BSD friendly foods. Losing weight, looking better and feeling better about yourself might help with the depression, along with the exercise. Good luck on all fronts and dont be afraid to ask as many questions as you think of.

    Determination to do this is certainlyup there.
    I have a very strong FH of diabetes. My maternal side is full of it. Grandmother, mother, 5 out of her 6 siblings and 60% of my cousins so being told I was pre diabetic was the jolt I needed. I used to joke that diabetes was in the post for me, half joking but knowing it was a real risk. Sadly, my illness, loosing my beloved mum, having to be medically retired from work and my DH developing a progressive neurological disorder all happened within a 5 year period and contributed to severe depression for which I’m still very much in the throes. During this time I list a family member I was extremely close to from complications of diabetes. I used to nag him, shout at him and throw down photos of diabetic amputations to try and get him to change his ways to no avail.

    As I said I ballooned in weight but didn’t have the energy to do anything about it. I now don’t have the choice. I’m fine with it and in a way, almost relieved as I’m being forced out of my complacency. Fortunately I’m a good cook although I’ve been extremely unwell of late and we resorted to getting meals from Cook to ensure we at least had nourishment. Hubbys limit us a baked potato.

    Anyway, enough waffle, I’ll probably need advice as to what are suitable substitutes as I start delving more into the books.

    Hi Bobbs,

    One of the key things you need to do to reverse your pre-diabetes is reduce your carb intake – a really good, helpful website for understanding how to do this is dietdoctor.com. When I was first diagnosed with type II diabetes I found the visual guides on there really invaluable. Here’s an example https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/vegetables – this one is on vegetables but there are several, including one on oils and sauces (or something like that). The site also has a lot of other info – articles, interviews etc, and recipes – so have a good look around.

    Hello Bobbs, and WELCOME! I have much compassion for you living with chronic pain as well as depression. I’ve been
    there, and I know that one fuels the other. I lived this way for 17 years, and accepted the fact that this would be my
    destiny. I existed on painkillers, and because I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes, life became very small and
    isolated. I piled on 10 stone during this period. All that changed in june 2016, when I stumbled upon the BSD. Ten
    months later I was 140lbs lighter, and now live the life I was meant to live. I was never diabetic though, so that is
    the most urgent thing that you must address. There are many here that have reversed their diabetic status, and will
    surely offer help and encouragement. I use avocado oil, which has no discernible taste to me, and it has the advantage
    of having a much higher smoke point than olive oil, for example. I wish you the best! Join any thread that interests you.

    Just wanted to say good luck Bobbs and I hope you’re proud of you for starting this journey. Like you I’ve been in the throes of emotional pain and grief, with three very significant losses in my life in recent years, sadly mostly at all too young an age.

    I’m on my third week of the BSD and according to my scales 2 days ago I’ve lost 11lbs. I’m loving swimming and as you say, splashing about in the pool. I’m T2 diabetic and am very much hoping cutting out bread, potatoes etc is going to have a good effect, as well as learning more about carbs in fruit and veg and making wise choices.

    I’ve lurked mainly on these forums so far and can see there are some very lovely and supportive people round these parts. Sooo just wanted to add my encouragement to you xxx

    Hi Bobbs

    Good on you for launching into the bsd. You said that the diagnosis of prediabetes was the impetus for addressing the weight issue. You mentioned complacency, that is a very good description of what I felt too. I have been on diets before which I failed to keep up, and put the weight back on with interest. So I had done my best and couldn’t do more.

    But the prediabetes diagnosis inspired me to make the changes in January 2019, and decide that this is my permanent WOE. That’s Way of Eating, the WOE that makes me satisfied, well fed and in a wonderful community that has very experienced members when I have questions. That is really important when the accepted views on fats and grains are not helpful at all to people facing diabetes.

    Have you had a physio plan recently? There are exercises that can be done from a chair and with low impact. Even if exercises don’t appeal to you initially, it’s going to boost your mood.

    Maybe you prefer to address food first. My first act was to throw away the pasta and rice, and only buy potatoes sufficient for my husband. This was cathartic, gave me a feeling of accomplishment that lasted some time. 😁

    I remember now what I initially wanted to ask.
    I have a medication induced extremely dry mouth and don’t get on well with the artificial saliva products so
    I mainly drink tea with full fat milk or diet drinks, the ones with sucralose and acesulfame K.
    Black tea or even with lemon actually nauseates me. Fruit teas and herbal teas also make me feel nauseated.
    I should add that chronic nausea is a way of life and is a side effect of my antidepressant. I’m super sensitive to a lot of drugs and it took 5 different antidepressants some which made me suicidal before settling on venlafaxine. I’m on the maximum dose without being an inpatient. It was decided that the nausea was a small price to pay to get an antidepressant that worked for me. Thank goodness that food doesn’t make me nauseated the same way as lots of drinks.

    I can tolerate bovril occasionally but I hate oxo. Drinking large amounts of plain water or even with mint or slices of lemon or lime also makes me feel sick.
    I don’t want to use all my calorie allowance on milk for my tea although I’d be happy living on tea all day and a nice dinner.

    Am I right in thinking that diet drinks are out?

    Bobbs, have you tried replacing cow’s milk with unsweetened almond milk? (found in the dairy section of the market)
    The carbs are negligeable, and only 30cal. in a cup!

    Diet drinks are not good. Sucralose, aspartame, etc. tend to cause insulin spikes and are injurious to your gut microbiome. I still drank them when I started the BSD, but only one a day. Within a few weeks my palate shifted and I found their flavors noxious.

    Have you tried adding fresh ginger juice to water? It’s suppose to aid with nausea in general, but I don’t know that it would have that effect since yours is medication-induced.

    Ginger also helps with headaches to. I suffered really bad headaches when I was pregnant and didn’t want to take tablets so ate stem ginger from the health food store.. probably not good BSD but the cordial made yourself from fresh ginger is great. Thanks to Esnecca I tried it and love it. Also keeps us regular🤣

    You are fabulous. I don’t know why I didn’t think of ginger juice as it’s ginger beer I drink most of the time. I’ll get a piece of ginger root and add it to sparkling water. The fizz helps with the nastyness that you get with a constant
    dry mouth

    I’ve actually got unsweetened almost milk in the cupboard. I’ve just never been brave enough to add it to my tea.
    I tend to like baby tea but nothing ventured. I shall give both solutions a try.

    Bobbs you need to grate the ginger skin and all, put it in some water in a pan, not loads as I took it. Bring it the boil and then let it cool strain it into a jug and put it in the fridge, then use it like any other squash. Dilute to taste🤣❤️ Birdy 💞🦜
