JGwen, is it just my imagination, or are we seeing more and more of this stuff every week? WHY would anyone
take advice from a total nobody on the forum trying to sell snake oil?

Hi Allie, I do think there is more spam on the site than there used to be. – This guy is probably trying to find mugs on every diet forum to buy his snake oil.

With regard to the batch of posts about a restaurant. As there are ever more websites, there is more and more competition to be the businesses that come up on the first page of any search. Part of the way google ranks a website and decides where it comes in each search is by how many highly ranked websites have links to it. That’s why there are businesses in countries where labour is cheap that are putting out posts with website links on forums and even just signing up members to a forum and including links to websites in the profile page of those members does the same job.

If there were paid moderators taking an active role on the site they would block such activity, but then it would cause a time lag in conversations because each post would have to be approved by a moderator.
