    Hello everyone,
I’m new to the forums and just spent some time reading through this thread for inspiration. I’m in Week 5 of Fast800 and very happy with the results so far (8kg lost) and plan to keep going until mid-July. I have a total of 28-30kg to lose to get to a healthy weight so I’m in this for a while.

I’ve done intermittent fasting before and found that it really suppressed my appetite and sense of fullness, which lasted for quite a while after I gave up on it. I notice the same now, I’m feeling full much more quickly than usual and I find it hard to imagine eating much larger quantities of food.

For me the lockdown makes it easier to stick with the diet (less socialising, easier to give up alcohol). I’m using this as an opportunity to turn things around for myself.

Welcome Nicole, Steviep and Zuzuvela! Sounds like you are all doing brilliantly.

Rosy – what a lovely surprise that gentleman is going to have! Well done you. I’d be cream crackered after 10 minutes of digging! Just thinking about your milk consumption (never imagined I’d be writing those words to anyone!). If it doesn’t take you over your 800 cals, I don’t suppose it’s a problem to be solved, though it might be that ‘spending’ those calories on other things is ultimately healthier/more appealing. I have learned to tolerate, and then like green tea since starting this WOE. My only experience of it previously was at a popular restaurant chain and it was not a happy encounter. I started off with the flavoured ones (it’s more scent than flavour to me, but makes it a more enjoyable sensory experience initially) – I like mint green tea, blueberry and occasionally salted caramel the most. Now I like the plain stuff too! Fruit teabags (but not the granules because they have extra cals) could also be an option, if you are keen to move away from milky hot drinks. It’s not the same, but we do adjust. I now have one coffee a day that has a splash of double cream (either first thing or after dinner, depending on mood) and really, really enjoy it. Occasionally I have some unsweetened almond milk in a coffee, but have stopped buying ‘normal’ milk altogether and I don’t miss it.

Julz (please imagine me wearing steel toecaps) – you overcame the cravings yesterday and you can and will do it today and tomorrow! You know that the longer you ride out the temptations, the less powerful they get. I have those days when I can’t seem to do much except obsess about food, but we do not have to turn those thoughts into action (which I guess is a lot of what the meditation is about). We know it’s about making a good choice each time and you can, have and will do that. Just keep doing what you’re doing. We all believe in you and are cheering you on, so tell any self-doubt to bugger off and believe in yourself too.

I have just been lucky enough to be able to submit my claim for a self-employment support grant. I can’t describe the sense of relief, especially since I know my business will not be able to operate again until September at the earliest. Another huge positive is that our dogwalker is opening up again next week, so it will make it easier for me to look for alternative employment knowing that my best canine buddy can be taken care of. I’m hoping that reducing a big source of worry will make it easier to manage any stress healthily without being tempted to look in the fridge for help and build up my resilience and confidence under slightly less extreme pressure!

Rosy – might be worth reviewing your milk intake if you want to lower your carbs, as surprisingly they hide out there as well. Working on a frontline workers allotment is a great gift, I’m sure he’ll be really grateful.
Julz – hope that getting back to meditation again, helps you handle the all day food hauntings. I’m confident you can achieve something good be Saturday …. go for it!
Zuzu – welcome and congrats on your results to date. Sounds like you have a handle on things and a plan going forward, but if you need help please just shout.
Bryla – glad you’ve managed to take some pressure off and that it might allow you to avoid looking in the fridge so often.

Admit my week has not been as control as it should have been, so I am already mentally planning a different approach for next week, whilst making small adjustments for the next few days.
Keep going everyone … onwards and downwards!

Morning all, looking for some advice from those more knowledgeable. I’m 3 weeks in ( lost 17 pounds) so technically not a 12 th may starter (!)
I have been trying to stick to 20g carbs a day and have seen good weight loss so far. I also bought some urine dipstix to check for ketones and definitely had the no hunger buzz between 10 and 15 days. Now 3 weeks in I’m blooming starving, stomach feels like it might eat itself and am craving carbs and stodge like never before. Also noticed that now not detecting any ketones in my wee ( sorry TMI !) previous week was showing moderate amounts. Do this mean that I am now out of ketosis ?? I’ve stuck religiously to plan and not gone above at most 20-30 g of carbs. I thought one you were in ketosis it should stay like that. Consequently I’m now really struggling and feel quite cr*ppy. Anyone shed any light ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Plumpgoose.

Welcome to this thread, this thread is a mixture of newcomers through to old timers. A lot of people like to set themselves targets on a weekly basis, thats why the title is begging 12th May. – – Its not for just people who start this way of eating in a specific week. – We used to have a similar thread running for people who wanted to set themselves a challenge on a monthly basis, as well, but that has been put on the sideline at present.

    ————-

Right to answer your questions. – The mixture of gut bacteria you have is based on the mixture of food you eat. Some bacteria need you to eat a high carb diet to provide them with their food. – Interestingly, those bacteria have the ability to send signals to your brain to urge you to feed them. – The cravings for carbs you are feeling are the “sugar hungry” bacteria trying to urge you to eat for their benefit. Reducing the level of these bacteria is good, they are also responsible for triggering inflammation. They also reproduce rapidly whenever you do feed them, so stepping off the wagon just once to ease the cravings isn’t a good idea. – Hopefully knowing this helps you resist their urgings.

The pee sticks are not a reliable way of testing for ketosis. When you first start to be in ketosis your body is not used to being in this state and is inefficient. It produces more ketones than you need and the surplus are released in your urine. Very quickly your body will stop being wasteful with resources, and stop producing surplus ketones.

The other ways of measuring and monitoring ketosis are by testing for the byproducts of burning ketones. So using blood and breath testing is consistent no matter.how well adjusted your body is to ketosis. – The cheapest way of doing this is using one of the cheap breathalyzers. In the past I have posted links to information on using a AT6000 which is available from Amazon for a few pounds on the Take a Look at This Thread. – If you search for AT6000 you should find them..

    Hi Plump Goose. Welcome!

Just wanted to highlight that fact that you have discarded 17lbs in 3 weeks!!! Woohoo! That’s absolutely fabulous and you now know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this WOE (way of eating) works and there is no sense in which you are not succeeding Would you have believed that that was going to happen back on day 1?. You are just doing a bit of fine-tuning/ learning more. Almost all of us have had similar patches of cravings/ hunger, so it is normal. and it definitely does pass.

A thought in addition to JGwen’s expert advice – when I was starting out I was advised by our wise thread-mates to make sure that I was getting enough healthy fat in what I was eating – fat is essential for us on this WOE if we are going to avoid feeling hungry. I did have to work a bit at that, but it made a difference for me and chased away hunger (carb cravings are a different, horrible beast). Healthy fats should ideally make up the largest portion (i.e. more than protein and a lot more than carbs) of your calorie intake, so it might be worth double-checking that.

    Hi everyone, Day 19,
struggling these last few days, emotionally and with lockdown and cravings. Feeling a bit bamboozled by all the information out there on keto dieting. Do I need to go into ketosis for this diet (BSD) to work, if so what exactly should I be eating. I started out on one diet and after research of sorts I feel like I should be doing something different. SO CONFUSED!
I cut my foot today as well, with only half an hour’s work left to do on the allotment job,…. made me mad. Hobbling about now with a sore foot which isn’t helping….
Babysitting again tomorrow so really needing to gain strength not to “relapse” …. oh, and the hayfever! nits! & rat problem (help on it’s way!)
All said and done I do have a lot to be grateful for, health of myself and my family, a secure home and income, friends etc etc.
Hope you’ve all had a good day 🌹🍏

Hey Rosyapple. Try not to let confusion get you down. Deep breath.
Basic principles….. 800 calories, no refined carbs. Keep away from the big hitters and your 80% there – bread, rice, pasta, crisps, sweets, biscuits. The rest is fine tuning to suit our own bodies and needs. I’ve tended just to keep it simple – veg, salad, meat, cheese, Yogurt some red berries. I log what I have and don’t necessarily follow recipes.
When I’ve read Keto stuff as opposed to the BSD / Fast800 stuff I find it doesn’t help as the calorie counts are often very high with ‘fake’ sweet things.
Just take yourself back to basics, and go one day at a time.
I do feel for you with all the unwanted visitors. Not making it easy. But for babysitting tomorrow – go with some prepared acceptable snax – cheese, hot drinks, nuts and keep away from the bad stuff. Remember it will not make you feel good, your sugar levels will spike then drop and you’ll feel rubbish, then you’ll be craving more pointless food with no nutritional value, then you’ll regret it and best yourself up – it’s just not worth it is it?! You can do it. Think how pleased you’ll be getting through it without a relapse. It’s something to aim for and be proud of. You can do it!!!

Rosy, breath …. what you have been doing to date has been working, so don’t over think things, don’t second guess yourself, just keep going.

Try to take 10mins for yourself and find some balance. Hold on to the positives and ditch the negatives. Don’t worry about ketotos right now, you can look at that later. Right now, get your foot healed, give yourself a little space and when you are no longer grappling with other stresses, we can look at whether or not you need to tweak what you’re doing BSD-wise.

So, be gentle with yourself, check you are eating enough good fats and hydrating well; getting enough rest and sleep.

Tomorrow is a new day and a clean slate.

Thanks so much WindyJulz and SunnyB,
just what I needed to hear, you both have given me strength to get through my shift with the little ones. I am armed with some egg and bacon “muffins” that I made, defrosted and ready to go!
I pretty much have the big hitters nailed and thankfully don’t miss them too much. Luckily I enjoy vegetables and cooking, though not the washing up!
I’m really missing my friends and family, who isn’t? But I am loving looking after 3 little girls (I have 1 grown up son) I’ve surprised myself how much! Especially at this time in the morning!!

That’s 3lbs this week and I can’t tell you how happy I am. Tuesday will be the end of my first 4 weeks and if I can drop a pound by then that would be a full stone!

Rosy – I hope your foot isn’t too painful today. Ouch! I don’t find keto diet material remotely helpful either. There are similarities with our WOE but I think in any situation we just need to follow one set of rules at a time. Your muffins sound delicious! Enjoy the company of your little charges.

Rosyapple, I’ve got a new mantra for you (just came up with this one and I’m quite please with myself about it…). You know how people are using the lockdown to learn all sorts of skills, like ‘during the corona lockdown I learned to play the violin or I redecorated the whole house’ – sort of thing? It used to really annoy me (2 children at home and work – I have even less time for new projects!), but if you can’t beat them, join them. When this madness ends, we’ll be able to say: “During the coronavirus lockdown I did the BSD and finally lost a ton of weight!” I already feel super proud!!

have managed a few good walks but still need to get back to those upper body exercises!

We’re almost in winter here in Aus so have reinstated my favourite miso soup -I make it with extra veg and a dessertspoon of tahini for a wonderful sesame taste and some good fats!

    Morning all, Day 20
Not feeling great, had a massive binge yesterday afternoon/evening, lots of carbs 😦
I don’t know what’s happening?? Just not happy.
Again I resolve to get back on the horse.
I’ve had a look at next week’s menu and have made a couple of adjustments. Firstly I’m going to ditch milk in drinks, I find it difficult to be disciplined with this so I’m trying a week without. Secondly I have been having a small bowl of porridge twice a week so I’m swapping it for more Greek yogurt, berries and nuts. I think that’s enough tweaking for this week.
Luckily I have the week off so I’m not vulnerable to snacking with the girls, though I will miss them.
I’m going to do my shopping today, 10 minute walk each way, test this foot out, still a bit sore.
The up coming week I shall be focusing on my own allotment as I’ve been so busy on the other one. The woman who I’ve been doing it for said her husband was chuffed at all the work I’ve done, l even got a £15 bonus. Nice!
Weigh in tomorrow, I’m suspecting no change, hopefully I haven’t gone up. Will look at my goals again to help spur me on. Still, 9llbs loss, not bad!
Have a great day everyone 🌹🍏

    Re-Joining!
I did BSD a while ago (in my head a couple of years, but I think it’s actually 4), lost a lot of weight and reduced blood sugar significantly to non-diabetic range.
Weight has crept back on a bit (not all of it!) and although I’ve not had an HaB1C test, it feels as if my blood sugar has risen – thanks Lockdown!
Good news is that after a couple of days of eating sensibly, symptoms of my BS being high are hugely decreased, and each of the 5g of sultanas I have in my breakfast porridge was a super sweet taste explosion this morning; I don’t normally notice them at all (and weighing them the last couple of days, the amount I had been putting in had definitely crept up from 5g).
I’ve joined diabetes UK’s Low Carb program – some of it is a bit patronising, but I really like the food recording part – and it’s currently reduced to £20 for the first year. But no chatty forums, so here I am!
I’m not quite down to 800 cals a day yet, but probably less than half of what I had been eating.

I’m at the end of Week 5 and I can now celebrate losing 10% of my bodyweight since my heaviest weigh-in (I lost 1kg before starting the diet). I had a high blood pressure reading at the GP about 4 weeks ago and had to do home readings for a week, leading to an average of normal blood pressure – I suffer from “white coat” syndrome. I still feel it’s a red flag and I’m hoping that all the lifestyle efforts will lead to consistently healthy blood pressure. I noticed that yoga and meditation really helps, but my body is obviously under pressure from the extra weight.

Sending a big virtual hug, Rosy A. I am certainly very up and down at the moment and it’s not because there’s one particular thing ‘wrong ‘. I know that I could do with a hug myself, though! Great attitude- back on the horse it is! This week away from the temptations of someone else’s kitchen sounds like just what you need. You’ve got a solid plan that you’ll be able to stick to. Your 9lbs is superb and you must not allow yourself to be discouraged if the scales aren’t where you hope tomorrow. You know you have had a couple of sizeable wobbles this week on the food front and that can and often does make a difference. You have come so far already in so many ways, so bank all that success and put the scales in their place in your mind – just one of a range of tools and measures you have at your disposal, but no big deal.

    Hi everyone !
Just sending a massive, virtual hug to anyone who needs one right now. I think feeling ‘ a bit up and down ‘ is totally normal given the circumstances.

Rosyapple, you are doing great and yet you tend to lose sight of that. Maybe you are not used to focusing on yourself ? Things will settle and I love the idea of making peace with your body, pampering yourself a bit . Don’t allow yourself to be bamboozled by the BSD v Keto issue . In many ways they are compatible but I sense the urge for low carb, keto friendly food substitutes just keeps the sugar fires burning.
No one is perfect all of the time, remember that !!
Take care of yourself too, Bryla . We need you !! You have been a total inspiration. Have you been able to see your Mum and Dad ?
Welcome Frog. All the best to you .Does the UK diabetes programme recommend the porridge and raisins ? They would be pretty high carb ? Are you given a daily carb target ?
    Just checked in my book
Porridge with semi skimmed milk 75 g ( 9g oats) is 9g carbs
Porridge with semi skimmed milk 220g (27g oats) is 27 g carbs
Porridge with water 220g ( 27g oats) is 19g carbs
I am in no way telling you what to do or not do….
All the best zuzuvela .Your blood pressure will definitely improve as you progress , as you have already seen and thet’s a brilliant discard, well done you !
Take care EC , you sound busy busy . Same here but at least I can escape into the garden when my head feels like it is about to explode !
Have to get back to my chores now but I am not far away. Can you believe it’s already May 17th !!! ??

Thanks for the kind words and the hug Bryla, here’s one for you 💝 (& anyone else who needs one!) 💖
    H
Wendleg, you’re right, I’m not so used to focusing on myself, I got into an abusive relationship for the first time at the age of 46 and it completely turned my world on it’s head for the whole 2 and a half years that I was in it. Awful, but not the forum for going too deeply into it. It’s interesting though how I had been following the BSD Mediterranean for some time previous to then, with good results. So I’m back now, where I left off having shed 2st 3llbs in total. I looked back at some photos from that time and I looked so bloated, unwell and unhappy. I’ve made an album in my phone of some of them plus recent photos to document my progress. Progress it has been and in SO many ways 😊
I’m going to focus solely on the BSD 800 for the next 4 weeks and stop watching videos on keto. I’m very happy with the diet I have. Trying some new recipes also this week.
Keep up the good work everybody and thank you! Love, 🌹🍏

The diabetes UK site considers anything below 150g of carb as low carb! I did look at it when I did BSD a few years ago, and didn’t bother because I didn’t consider it particularly low after I’d been doing BSD for a few months.
For £20 for a year, the food logging database seems a lot better than anything else I’ve used.

Porridge the way I make it is about 20g of mostly complex carb – highish, but for me, relatively low carb, low calorie and more importantly fills me up and stops me snacking (I ate at about 9 this morning, no lunch and about to eat supper). I might drop porridge once I get more back into BSD way of eating, but suits me for now.

Hi SunnyB, definitely recall your name too!

Just off from the first all-day online meeting-a lot better than I’d thought it would be with a lovely team of peers-so busy as you say, Wendy but glad for a good team!!
I am on track food wise, but do need to check the wine! ):

Rosyapple-I reiterate that you’re doing a great job and re-establishing self esteem after such a r’ship is not easy but you sound as if you’re on track!

    Merrymelba and Bryla
    here’s “my” miso soup recipe
1 sachet powdered dashi stock to 2 cups water
add wakame (dried seaweed) and chopped spring onions, shitake mushroom and any other veg (I mostly just go broccoli and maybe zuchhini) and add 1/2 block silken tofu
When cooked add 2-3 tablespoons of stock to 1 tablespoon miso paste and 1 of tahini
Stir to a thin paste then add the rest of the soup & veg
top with Japanese pepper to taste-enjoy!

We have a local Japanese deli where I get most of my ingredients-spiral foods make the best dashi-they even have a vegan one for those who don’t eat fish….but I’m sure most would be available online-it really is worth making from scratch and still easy once you have all the ingredients-really good for gut health and very filling

    Morning everyone

I’ve been really good this week, walked more steps and stuck to the plan rigidly and I am extremely disappointed to see a 1lb increase on the scales again this morning. Am about to embark on week 4 and since starting on 24th April have lost a total of 2.2 lbs. A very disappointing effort to reward ratio indeed. However, after a gloomy morning coffee I have had a shower, dusted myself down and decided that I HAVE to keep going. My weight this morning was 150.6 which for me is not good. I am aiming for 138 and it’s going to take a lot of effort and resolve to get back to that weight as things don’t seem to be working. I did consider trying something different. Has my body got used to low carb and do I need to mix things up. I did have my Friday night G&T but quite frankly I am not prepared to give up that one pleasure a week up. It doesn’t help that I see my husband eat more at breakfast than I probably eat all day and I can sometimes feel myself becoming quite resentful about things.

Week 4 starts tomorrow and so I will keep on with my plan to do the 8 weeks and hope to keep my resolve. There is no chance my jeans will fit by then at this rate.

I am sorry to read that others have had a few setbacks this week too. Let’s try and keep going. There have been some good weight losses (sadly not me) so let’s just dust ourselves down and keep on keeping on towards our goals. See you tomorrow for another hopefully better week.

    Hi Everyone,
I’m joining today. Have been back on the LCHF wagon for a week or so, getting my mind set right but I didn’t feel quite ready to put myself out there.
I lost 14 of the 28lbs I wanted to lose last year on this WOE but didn’t complete my journey and I have now gained that back and a bit more unfortunately. I have a wardrobe of clothes that don’t fit properly and everyday I struggle to find something to wear that is not tight, I end up wearing the same clothes over and over and am constantly adjusting them.. it is a joy stealer and not a good start to the day.
Anyhow, I know that it is within my power to fix this.I must take control of my eating and drinking and not keep making excuses for myself. I am going to try the Fast 800 and 20g carbs together with some TRE.
I realise I do need some support to reach my goals which is why I am posting on the forum, which is such a good resource and always such a brilliant read. Thank you for everyone who keeps it going old timers and new. I will try in a small way to offer some support others too when I can.
OK… onwards and hopefully downwards.. looking forward to reading everyone’s posts and here’s to a new week and undoubtedly, some excellent results! Greengal x

    Hi GreenGal

I remember you- welcome back! There are a few of us trying to undo bad management so you’re in very good company. We are fortunate to be amongst some very wise friends on the weekly thread who have lots of experience and expertise to help us to our goal.

Frog – I also remember you so welcome back too.

With the tools we have and with the support of fellow BSD/Fast 800 we will all hopefully achieve our goals. I think a new week begins tomorrow so get yourselves prepared for the week ahead and let’s hope we are all part of a downward curve next week.

    Hello everyone,
I’m struggling a bit today as well…..think its a monday thing maybe. Seems a lot of folk having to fight for it at the moment, with the best will in the world and the most positive outlook i think the way life is at the moment is taking its toll. But we all know what we need to do and know that it is in our best interests to stick with this as best as we can.
I’ve had a day thinking about food pretty much since 10:30. Ive had a light lunch of natural yogurt with some pecans and flax seed and maybe a few too many raisins! and a wee piece of cheese. Dinner will be grilled chicken salad…… and I’ll get some walking and some horse time in there as well. Hopefully wont be too far off plan. Some days are harder than others. I may try another 23 / 24 hour fast tomorrow – i did 2 last week and think it helped, I just wasnt going to make it through to dinner time today!
I feel for you ClarinetCathy, but you do know that you are in a better place than if you hadnt been eating this way. Dig deep and hopefully you will be rewarded in a more significant way next time you weigh in.

To bring a little light – I’m nearly 4 weeks in and yesterday i put on a pair of leggings that my hubby bought for me ages ago but mistakenly got a size 12 – there was no way they were going on then so they’ve been in a “maybe someday” drawer….. and they went on comfortably and went for a 4km walk with me yesterday! It does work if we can keep at it -= come one peeps, lets get our chins up!!

Hi everyone, I’ve been really busy and feeling emotional. It meant I binged a couple of times on crap but I got back on the wagon the next day and 2 binges is better than 7 which is what it was the week before. It’s the perils of emotional eating.

Anyway, I stepped on the scales this morning and I’ve lost 5.2lbs! I’ve used that to focus myself on what I could lose this week if I don’t binge but also as a reminder that one bad day doesn’t make a bad week if I get back on it rather than throwing the towel in.

One week down and 9 to go until my daughter’s birthday where I’d like to be a little less ashamed of the photos!

I’m trying to read everyone’s posts but it’s a lot and the kids are mithering. That miso soup sounds delicious and well done on all the walking for those of you fitting it in 🙂

Hi everyone, good to log on and see some positives happening here and everyone trying so hard. For those that are feeling a bit down, I hear you. I have been coping quite well up to now, but started to get down this weekend as it was very rainy and miserable and I have been coping with a cyst on my back that chose the weekend to become very painful and to try to get infected. Hoping to get in to see a doctor about it this week. My GP’s office has only been doing mostly telephone appointments up to now, but our restrictions start to ease this week and I think this is something they will need to deal with in person in any case.
In more positive news for me, a few weeks ago I bought two new pairs of shorts for summer and they were just a bit snug through the leg when I first tried them on, but I tried them today and they are fitting really well. I haven’t lost any more weight, but hopefully this means I’ve at least started losing some inches again. I pulled out a pair of my linen summer trousers as a new goal pair and I can get them on and zipped up but not buttoned yet, and I daren’t sit down in them. July and really warm weather will be here before we know it, so I am feeling motivated to get back into things and get to a point where I can wear them again.
I have spent the last couple of days doing 2MAD and very low carb. As a vegetarian, that has meant lots of eggs, cottage cheese and greek yogurt in order to keep my protein levels up. I’m getting less hungry day by day, so hopefully I’ll be able to transition back into fasting this week. I also have been able to get another harvest of salad greens from my balcony garden. My rocket and one variety of spinach are already bolting and going to seed, but the chard is starting to come along now, and I should have some snap peas in a few more weeks! I planted pole beans and scarlet runners last week and they are just germinating now.

    Morning all,
I survived the first week, and after a few days of brain fuzz, seemed to have adapted to the lower calorie intake!

A couple of no no’s….don’t watch finals of great British menu nor talk of grandkids eating pizza!!

Managed to take 3.8 kilos off, which given my objective of losing 10 kg is 38% of the way, but I take that with a dose of reality that most of that is water, and as some say the easier stuff to shift. In no doubt it will be at a slower pace..

Couple of questions, are folk saying that recipes in the book are low balling calorie count?

And with the exercises suggested, is it really saying 10 planks of 30 seconds each?.?

Felt quite pleased one day exercising off more calories than consumed, but it was tough on a fasting day.

Thanks for all encouragement, and so far I would encourage people having a tough spell, just focus on one day at a time, but it is a challenge worth taking on.

Final point, I am tired of red peppers in everything!!

    Best of luck to all.
