Is there anyone out there similar to me?
I am the wrong side of 70, have arthritis in foot and knee which makes it painful for me to walk very far.
I don’t have much to lose, 1 to 1 1/2 stones. I don’t have diabetes or even pre diabetes as far as I know but am losing weight to see if it will reduce the pain.
Started on Thursday, bad day so gloss over that, much better day Friday, lost a pound, out to dinner and theatre on Saturday and now here we are on Sunday with only a 4oz gain. Managed to do nearly 11000 steps yesterday but it was too much for my poor old pins. Anyhow I consider all of this a big plus so it’s off to Aqua class tomorrow to get rid of the gain plus a bit more.
Need your help to keep on the straight and narrow as have fairly large social life.

Hello Minnie, I am the same age as you, but have much more to lose, have been going for 7 weeks and have been slow but steady till the last few days. I have really bad sciatica from arthritis in the spine, but like you no diabetes or pre-diabetes.. I think Aqua class is really good, and I know I should be doing it. Walking tends to hurt. I am having a bad glitch as I said, and my weight loss is miniscule compared with many, but i can assure you it will work. My neurosurgeon says weight loss will definitely help, even if I decide on surgery in the near – or farther – future. You will find many inspirational posts on this site.

Great about the social life. Most I have found not a problem, as there is much to besides eat in most social situations

Hi Minnie, We have a real mix of every type and age of person here so I’m sure there will be someone like you!

If you want BSD to work for you, my advice would be to put some thought into your socialising. I’m not suggesting you stop it, no way! But consider what you need to eat and drink during your outings. What could be substituted? What do you drink? etc.

I drink herbal tea most of the time for example which fits BSD better than a fancy coffee or hot chocolate. I don’t bother with alcohol and just have a diet coke now and then. Food wise – it’s amazing how you can find some BSD options on the menu sometimes with just a bit of tweaking. Salads are good, chicken/meat/fish dishes – just ask for extra veg instead of ric/pasta/potatoes. Just give it a little thought and plan ahead. If you are going to places you know well you would know their menu. Skip pudding OR… ask for plain strawberries and cream. Or one scoop of ice cream – not perfect BSD but much closer than sticky toffee pudding and custard!

    keep enjoying life 🙂

    Hi Minnie
there’s a thread you might want to look through titled Eating Out, a combination of restaurants and supermarket lunch options.
It’s mostly chain restaurants, because local ones aren’t too helpful on a wide thread like this.
I eat out with friends probably about three times a week, sometimes with a glass of wine (and have had the odd cake splurge along the way) but I’ve still managed to loose 2 stone in just under 3 months – an average of a kilo a week.

the other thing that I’ve found it that as I’ve done the diet I’ve found it progressively easy to assess good options from restaurant menus.

    Urrrrgg.
Have just written a long post and then lost it.
Hallo Ruthdownunder,Izzy and Frog. Thank you for replying so quickly. I have been out today, eating again I’m afraid, but I was careful and only had one course of chicken and no wine, had soda and lime instead.

Ruth ,the Aqua I go to is at my local leisure centre and is Aqua walking. Less energetic than aqua aerobics but it’s amazing the things you can do when the water is taking your weight. We have ladies of all shapes and sizes plus some brave men who join us. It’s a jolly class and we have a lot of laughs.

Izzy and Frog, thank you for the advice re eating out and I have mad a note of the site you recommend Frog. 2 stone in 3months and eating out is amazing Frog and just shows what can be done if you put your mind to it. Well done. You have both made very helpful suggestions re food choices so thank you both for that so I’m grabbing my boot straps to drag me down to the weight I want.

Hi Minnie – it’s not a separate website, just a different thread on here
In the top right hand corner, there’s a search box, that helps you find key words that you’re interested in

searching on Eating Out may bring up tons of results – if it does, try searching for “Prezzo” or “Rouge” which are both definitely mentioned within that thread, but a bit less common (eating features rather a lot!!)

Thanks for info Frog. You seem to be very clued up on this site.
May I ask you a couple of questions?
Are the emails I receive only from sites I have visited?
How do I make a general post for all to see.
Do I have to keep going into different threads.
How do I post on my own thread.

In other words how does this system work?
Sorry a lot of questions. I hope you don’t mind me asking.

How are you doing Ruth? Have you managed to find an Aqua class yet? They are really helpful. I have a waterproof Garmin step counter so all the Aqua walking add to my step total.
Like you I find it difficult to walk very far so saw a suggestion on the forum of breaking it down into small sections which does help except that I seem to be jumping up and down to do a few more steps but keep telling myself it is using the energy.
My loss isn’t as fast as I would like but have not been doing it long so early days.
Fizzy water with a dash of lime is brilliant.
You sounded a bit down on the last post I read so I hope things are a bit better for you. I haven’t had sciatica but I know from friends that it is extremely painful.
    Keep strong.

Minnie, I have not yet found an Aqua class but it is on my list of things to do. OH is 83 and while very fit needs a fair bit of attention Sciatica is playing up because I have been doing a lot of gardening – yard work really, but it is not unbearable. The quack said I could come back sooner or later – 3 or 4 months – if I wanted the op, so I am hoping that I will be a lot lighter. Or at least a bit!

You can post anywhere, and if you tick the box below you will get lots of emails. You don’t have to tick the box, just go and check the threads, or start one. If you read Frog’s posts she is very active – think she works off her social life. She is quite inspirational as are many others on here.I think you have to go out, you must keep your life going, just keep vigilant

I must get a new step counter. I have a very low tech one somewhere!

The end of my 8 weeks is Monday, so will report on the weigh in thread – and keep going.
Onwards and downwards. Thanks for your kind thoughts
