I discovered I’m pre-diabetic 3 months ago and have been on Joel Fuhrman plant based diet in line with his book The End of Diabetes and someone suggested I research BSD as I was skinny to start with and am loosing too much weight. I’m hoping someone here can help me – how do I put on weight but reverse out of being pre-diabetic? I have low BP and normal cholesterol levels. I prefer plant based eating but am willing to eat dairy or meat/fish if I have to. Suggestions and advise much appreciated.

It is likely that you need to cut your carbohydrate intake and make sure you get enough calories from fat and protein to keep your weight steady.
Take some time and go listen to Dr. Ben Bikman’s podcasts which are very helpful in understanding how insulin works in your body. Being pre-diabetic means you are likely insulin resistant. Your blood sugars are rising — when they go up, your body produces even more insulin. Then you can become insulin resistant just because there is so much insulin floating around.
Fat is your best friend here, it has no effect on insulin. So butter, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil — all good fats that will not drive up your insulin. Protein is your second best friend — it has only a small effect on insulin. So eggs, meat, cheese. Veg and plants — ok if you stick with the low carb ones like greens (look at the veg recommended by Dr. Mosely for a list of best veg).
Seriously, Dr. Bikman is an expert and his podcasts are entertaining and informative. You have a unique problem — he can possibly help. -
Hi Beebusy35, I agree with everything Californiagirl has said. There is one other thing that ties in with diabetes. I too was of normal weight when first diagnoses i.e. 9 stone at 5 foot tall – so maybe half a stone over according to BMI scales. There is a thing called hidden fat, visceral fat or organ fat – to give it several of its names. It is not the adipose we get around the tummy, arms or legs. It is a hard lard type fat that surrounds the organs like the liver, heart, kidneys and more importantly for diabetics, the pancreas. You can get rid of this fat quite easily by cutting carbs and doing everything Californiagirl says. I lost only 3lbs in week one but 5 inches from my waist – a sure sign it was visceral fat. When you hear you have to get rid of this fat your instinct is to give up fat – NO, as said above, fat is your friend, as long as it is the right kind of fats like olive oil, avocado oil (I am unconvinced about coconut oil), avocado, nuts, seeds, real butter and full fat cheese and yoghurt. It is not the fat in the last 3 things that hurt you it is the chemicals they put in LOW FAT versions. So stick with the real thing. Think about processes i.e. butter is just churned milk – not much of a process, low fat butter is highly processed and contains added chemicals, emolients etc.
It is a whole new way of thinking and some people find it difficult to consider full fat food but believe us, it is best for you.
