Here we are in April already !!!

This is the ongoing thread from the 12 week reset January to March 2024 and is for anyone continuing their Fast 800 , low carb journey or for new members starting out and looking for a bit of support .

We are not perfect 😉 but we are pretty determined and convinced that low carb and healthy fats is the way to go to promote good health and of course ultimately lose weight .It happens at different rates according to our start points and health issues but we have been around a while and have quite alot of experience in this way of eating .

So continue or start with us and we will do our best to keep you motivated and answer any queries .
All the very best to you for this new month of April. The thread will run for a month

    Thanks Wendy 🙂

Just written this in the March thread too but as it’s a new month have copied it over:

    Hiya,

Thanks for the welcome back 🙂
I’ve really struggled to eat healthily….came down with a cold on Jan 1st…I don’t do too well with viruses, kept going recwork etc but couldn’t exercise and probs had some comfort food, then one of our cats went missing for 3 weeks end Jan into Feb….I was really depressed tbh, and I think still burnt out by a stressful preceding year….he came back thank goodness (think he was shut in somewhere as quite skinny, but otherwise well and delighted to see us), we aldo had some celebrations in between so lots of eating. I was just starting again to try and build fitness slowly, then came down with a chest infection on mother’s day that had me in bed for a week and a half, it was grim….so, back recovering again, and determined to shift the weight…..

Brilliant to see so many peeps totally on it with the WOE, well done everyone! You can be my inspiration!

Hi Wendy, just responded to you comment about the Glucose Goddess – I think she also has a cook book but watching her Youtubes and many others I think I am very well versed in all things low carb, insulin resistance etc. Just need to practice what I have learned.

I will ask again, in case you have left last thread. Did you send me a new phone number.

I will report in tomorrow as I weigh in on a Tuesday.

I hope you are feeling much better now Clare & pleased your cat was found because I know how stressful it is & when our cat, who had become older & a bit dotty, went missing I went around our local area putting up posters & knocking on doors opened by very suspicious people wondering why I had appeared on their doorstep! She turned up at a local children’s nursery being made a fuss of by all the children & fortunately one of the helpers noticed one of my posters 😀
Onwards we go in April & hopefully downwards in weight on this WOE👍

You really have had a tough time Clare but good to see that you are still with us and hopefully you can fully recover now and get your mojo back . We are all here to support you and anyone else struggling.

I have to be careful about getting a bit bored with my meals . I will get my low carb recipe books out and liven things up a bit .Any Easter indulgences were not that great to be honest .No Easter eggs but an apple crumble which as I should have known set off an uncomfortable bout of acid reflux .I don’t know if it’s the gluten or the sugar overload but I should have learned my lesson by now.! Oh well !!

What’s this I am seeing about an artificial pancreas for diabetics ?? I think this is for Type 1 ? SG will know .

Hope everyone has a good day /week xx

Hi all, I am still up and down around the 72kgs but still sticking with it. As I said before, that seems to be my set point. I guess it could be a plateau in which case I will get some movement as long as I don’t mess it up. I have not had any treats over Easter, don’t even like chocolate except 75% really dark.

I have no idea about the artificial pancreas except what I saw on the news today. Seems to be similar to the insulin pumps you could have under the skin which detect when you need insulin and it does it automatically. I didn’t get the impression that it gave the pancreas the ability to start producing insulin, doubt that is possible in T1. I am sure there must be more to it than that.

Good to see our monthly thread is already lively with plenty of posts. Thanks to Wendy for making sure the thread was set up.

My Easter included some indulgences, mainly of an alcoholic nature. It was OH’s birthday weekend, so some celebration was in order. This being the case, I’m not weighing until Thursday, to give the carb water retention a chance to discipat a bit. However, I can report that over the 12wk reset, I managed to ditch 7.5lb. Happy with that, as those 12wks included, 2 x birthday celebrations, a weekend away and a 2wk holiday.

This month I shall only be around until 12th April, when our road trip begins, but meanwhile I’m planning to remain focused and hopefully continue to make positive progress🤞🏻….. want to get as close the goal weight as I can before we leave.

Anyway, keeep going everyone, we know this way of eating works, we just need to make wise and mindful food choices. And if we stumble today, we can simple dust ourselves off and start afresh tomorrow 🙂. Have a good month folks.

    Hello everyone.
Easter and hot cross buns are behind me, and we are into Autumn here. I need to get refocused (how often have I said this!!) and this is an ideal time. I have 2 good friends going away for May and June, so that will mean less theatre nights, meals and wine. I need to make the most of this quieter social time as I certainly indulged over summer.
Today is Day 2 – early days. TRE. Lunch was some veggies and a poached egg, and dinner will be prawns, tomato and veg with Endame “pasta”, followed by a chia pudding.
I’m trying to persuade myself to get out and swim. So by writing it here I may make it happen 🤣
I always read the forums even when I am not doing 800/20 and it is always good to read all the news and happenings.

Just popping in to say ‘Thank you’ for setting up a new thread.

Sunny we are away the same day!

So realistically I’m not going to be around much until June! But, I will continue with ‘my’ way of eating until we go away at least. I have decided that on the cruise part of our holiday I’ll pass on cheese and biscuits. I’m not a dessert person but I will try the odd hot soufflé!

I had a real eye opener at the weekend. I needed to buy ice cream for my grandsons for dinner this weekend. I had some Carte d’Or (lots of other makes are available) in the freezer and took a look at the ingredients. I’ve never done this before as I don’t eat ice cream and I’d just ‘assumed’ it was a good make so all good. Wrong! The first, and probably only recognisable , ingredient is ‘dehydrated skimmed milk’! Who would have thought that ‘ice cream’ is just a load of E numbers. Anyway, I did find an ice cream made with ‘real’ ingredients. OH said the price was crazy. I said do you really want to feed your grandchildren this ‘ ‘UPF’ substitute? Obviously not. So we now have ‘real’ ice cream. I think when we were young there were no where near as many UPFs so we probably don’t suffer from the same problems as todays ‘fast food fans’ are going to have to contend with in their futures.

Hope April is a good month for everyone … just one month at a time and we’ll all get there in the end.

P.S. just interested to know how the 12 week journaler’s found the journey. Would you do it again? Was it helpful?

Hey V, so we leave home the same day and like you, I won’t be around much for a couple of months, as we’re not due back in the UK until 12th July and I’ll be having a bit of a tech detox.

Would like to say I was shocked about the ice cream ingredients, but sadly I’m not. And you’re right, who knows what problems may be laying in store for future generations, because of all these fake ingredients.

Though I started the 12 week challenge with a journal, I confess I didn’t persist with it. Initially I found it helpful, but during our February holiday, my attention to it faded and I didn’t manage to claw it back.

A non-scales victory today. On a whim I decided to try on the dress I wore for DD’s wedding nearly two years ago, when it was a very snug fit (so much so, I’d bought a backup dress just in case!). Today it did up easily and was comfortable…. just not got anywhere fancy enough to wear it at present. Nice to know I could though 🙂.

Keep on keeping on, SG, I’m sure you’ll see some movement soon.
Merry, good to see you posting again … hope you’ll be popping in here more frequently now.
    Keep the faith everyone.

Welcome back Merry ! Good to see you back with us . Think of April as your reset ? Hopefully we can keep you focused ! You know what to do 😉

V however tempted I may be by the sugar monster still, I will never touch the nasty ultra processed foods as I know they are toxic and will muck me up .Hubby still munches his Magnums , packets of crisps and Tuc biscuits but I will not indulge . I agree, we had more natural , preservative free foods growing up .I hope my little grandson can be taught good eating habits too ! I won”t be buying him sweets that’s for sure . By the way 1960smp I would love to be babysitting him ! .Hope all goes well with yours .. and your progress of course !

You will get where you want to be, SG .Not long until you go off on your travels V and Sunny B . Enjoy the special moments !

About the journal .I did enjoy filling it in and tracking my progress but got a bit bored towards the end . I do believe a normal diary would suffice and that’s what I have for April and going forward .

    All the best everyone xx

Hi all, I very quickly got fed up of filling in the same details day in day out, with the exception of weight and exercise nothing ever changed. I have a chart on my fridge door with my weight plus I fill in a notebook with exercise, weight, date, blood glucose and insulin units, so I guess I do journal daily but without all the navel gazing type commentry.

Nearly gave in yesterday as I was a bit fed up with my weight sticking at 72kgs. I picked up the telephone to reserve a table for Monday nights quiz but the restaurant was closed. Got weighed this morning and I have lost 0.4kgs or a pound so not bothering with the quiz. I would be so cross with myself if I went and ate a meal I don’t really want and had a few glasses of wine which I would be bound to have and then gained 1 or 2 pounds. Not long to go now with 4lbs and 3 weeks. If I can get down to just under 71kgs I will be over the moon.

I am trying the Glucose Goddess way of eating. She has ten rules. Number one is always start the day with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water, then have a savoury breakfast like eggs, even if you want to have a slice of toast, eat the toast after the eggs. I don’t have the toast. Next, always eat your leafy green veg first, so yesterday I had a chicken salad with the usual lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, spring onion with chicken and balsamic and oil dressing. Munched my way through the lettuce and cucumber first. It is supposed to form a mesh over the gut opening and stops higher transit foods like bread going down too fast and causing a sugar spike – that then makes you eat more because you digest that easily, glucose goes up then drops making you want to eat more. If anyone is interested I can include some of her other hacks and she is not even talking about diabetics. Just people who want to lose weight but find it difficult and cannot understand why. She recommends a supplement of mulberry leaf but I am giving that a miss. Or you could watch one of her podcast here – https://youtu.be/HEEUrIQ_3O4?si=xu4XAXDBkuMneFe-

We are having some good weather so I am going to finally get out into the garden and clean up the cat poo in my little raised bed. Keep on keeping on….

I’m on late afternoon on day 4. Going well so far with a bit more energy in my step. That’s been helped by a beautiful warm autumn day here (sorry for the folks further north who are getting lots of rain!). I got into the garden and planted some seeds etc, so that took my mind off snacking.
Tonight I’m making a fish pie with cauliflower mash topping, which will do me for 3 night, along with some veg.
You are so determined when it comes to denying the carb cravings Wendy – I congratulate you. Your good health defeats carbs easily.

Gardening is a great way to keep occupied and away from snacks … and you get some exercise too, so it’s a win/win. I’d sort of forgotten about cauli mash, but needed to use a chunk of cauli and some celeriac and decided to cook them together as mash … delicious!

It was lovely to have the dress fit so well, Margaret and hopefully there will be a chance to wear it again at some point. I’m sure if you’ve maintained focus, there will be a positive result tomorrow, let us know how you get on.

Reporting in with a 3/4 lb weight gain which is rather irritating but realising I need to shake up the routine that I have fallen into since Christmas. I have been too sedentary with low energy mostly due to SAD & most days still feel depressed but the lighter evening & slightly brighter days are helping. This morning I will sit outside having coffee with neighbours hopefully in the sunshine & also force myself to exercise with my lights weights to my Jane Fonda dvd. I know that I must start including more activities from now on because I feel sluggish & unfit. I did spring clean our bedroom last week & must finish throwing out shoes I can no longer wear & clear out my wardrobe of clothes I no longer like & also throw out old toiletries & makeup. It’s difficult because my motivation & energy levels are low & I will only have a glass of wine over the weekend as a treat & not accompany it will favourite baked Italian nibbles substituting carrots sticks red pepper to nibble!!
Well I’ve owned up & written it down so honour bound must do it now & really try to get stuck in with losing at a couple of pounds next week 🤔

I am really doing my best to stick to 800 calories a day – I think I am probably landing at about 1,000. I am not weighing myself very often but notice that my trousers feel a bit looser… although it maybe they have stretched a bit after three days in a row wearing (we are camping at the moment).
I am soooo looking forward to being part of this group. Thank you for including me. It can be lonely out there trying to get on top of too much weight and the impacts on your health… it has been for me!

I have completed my Jane Fonda dvd with light weights this morning & eaten 100g of organic full fat natural yoghurt with a banana two teaspoons honey & few cranberries. I am at the moment feeling quite pleased with myself😀By the way I’m not pre-diabetic so allow myself occasional honey but never add sugar to anything unless I have guests & make a pudding. I otherwise try to keep low carb occasionally eating small servings of sweet potatoes, or wholewheat couscous or brown rice.
Onwards everyone then doing our best this next week👍🤞🤞

Hi everyone, thank you for the welcome back, I really appreciate it 🙂

I am not far off a stone short of my heaviest weight 🙁

    I originally lost 3.5 stone…..so, that’s a gain of over 2 stone again….

I know getting rid of my larger clothws was in theory a good idea, but……a bit limited currently!!

Any how, I’ve been eating ‘on plan’ for 3 days now, no naughty treats, and yesterday I re-started recording my food….I’m not right down on calories yet, I’m easing myself into it…..

I’ve been able to restart some walks and light exercise after the chest infection, so slowly trying to build up without going too fast and injuring myself or getting over-tired. Not always working, but, well, I guess it’s progress.

Lovely to hear everyone really working at this, whether it’s a good place or a struggle….

No not shocked S-G & I rarely eat breakfast doing TRE until lunchtime during the week but occasionally have full fat yoghurt for the calcium because I have Oatley in my coffee that does have some added calcium & Kefir two or three times a week. I know dried fruit & bananas plus wine are high in sugar but I made a conscious choice to eat this today. I don’t feel affected by some sugar & I am fortunate in not being pre-diabetic or close to that blood sugar range although of course such foods are not recommended BSDiet food. I am recording calories but not usually the total carb content.
    Thank you for your concern.

Hi Margaret, it was the banana and honey that concerned me, not the yoghurt. Total carbs came to 58g but if you are not eating that every day we are all allowed a treat. I know a lot of people think honey is not as bad a sugar and is actually good for them but it simply is not true. Have you heard of the Glucose Goddess, she explains sugar and insulin spikes in non-diabetics and is worth a look/listen. She has loads of podcasts on YouTube but here is the first one I watched which certainly opened my eyes and I have been doing this for years.

Thank you S-G I haven’t completely watched this yet & will finish doing so today but the thought occurred to me that a simple solution might be eating a green salad before lunch & supper each day to prime our bodies?. Also I don’t know if you have previously come across John Yudkin who wrote Pure White & Deadly about the effects of sugar on human physiology? He was way ahead of his time researching & writing in the 1980s who was ridiculed & ostracised by his academic community & I think he sadly went into isolation & died before being vindicated.
I have plenty of salad in the fridge so will start eating it as a starter however for the occasional breakfast of porridge or yoghurt I have I’m not sure what to eat first perhaps an apple or some nuts? But most days I do TRE & don’t eat anything before lunch.
It’s all most interesting & intriguing how our digestive system & particularly our gut micro biome interacts with our brain via the vagus nerve to affect mood as well as many other physiological processes & pleasing that research continues now. I certainly think that Kefir & organic yoghurt are helpful but I don’t like kimchi & some of the other recommended pre-biotic foods to eat that increase healthy & helpful bacteria but try to do the best I can. I’m still riding a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with SAD & still get sabotaged by my sweet tooth & actually found some madeleines in the freezer last night that I thawed out & ate two🙀I will try to do better today!🤞🤞
I hope everyone has a good day.

Hi all, still no movement from me, dithering between 71.6 and 71.8 but still keeping on – although I would have loved a v&t last night. I am also having trouble sleeping and would like a nightcap but know it can go one or 2 ways, either I fall asleep straight away and wake up 2 hours later or I still cant get to sleep so makes not difference. It is my wedding anniversary on the 16th so trying to hold out until then. Not had a drink in nearly 3 weeks.

Margaret, I am glad you have found GG helpful. As for the porridge breakfast, some yoghurt acts as a protiens or a berry fruit or nuts before you get down to the oats. The French tend to have a small green salad before their evening meal, wonder if that is their secret to staying slimmer than most other countries. For me now, I am usually the one prepping the meal so if there are veg I nibble on some raw or have a few olives to hand or cut a cucumber into chunks and nibble on that. Not sure if it is working but it is a simple thing to try. Hope the nicer weather cheers you up and you can get out of your SAD mood.

I am aware of Pure White and Deadly but as someone who never eats true sugar in any form I never bothered to read it. I was once told at the age of 13 that sugar is a poison so I have never bothered, no honey or maltose, fructose, etc sugar by any other name except maybe lactose in milk. Although come to think of it, I don’t have milk either, black coffee or green tea. I don’t have a sweet tooth so I never envy those eating cake or chocolate (occasional 75% dark square) although when we are out with people they either apologise or try to get me to have something. Give me a pork pie any day – bad carbs are my thing 🙂

Hi there, this is officially my first weigh in for the April thread with a loss of 1lb. Okay, so it is something but I reached that on around day 3 so hoped to do better. However, it is an incentive to keep on …. with just 2 weeks to sitters arriving so the holiday mood starts.

The exercise has to wait as I spent about 2 hours spring cleaning my bedroom yesterday and today I am starting on the bathroom cabinet. Also have some small baskets at the end of the bath that things end up in so need a total clear out. Maybe there will be some room in the cabinet for the odds and ends.

    Have a good week everyone.

SG – I think 2 hours of spring cleaning equals exercise in my book!!

Hi all, feeling super great today, lost another half a pound. Now at the lowest weight since I first did this diet when I lost 28lbs so this time I am down 24lbs. Don’t expect to do much better before the cruise but will be even closer if I can drop another 2 or 3 before we go. Just got wedding anniversary next week but it will be a glass or 2 of wine and a meal made by me.

Merry, I am so grateful I can manage to do such a hard shift, moving the bed out, climbing over with the vac, washing floors – oh and while I have the mop out I might as well do the spare room and the bathroom floors. Cleared out the bathroom undersink cabinet where I found 6 bottles of shampoo, 2 conditioners, 3 bodywash, 4 nailvarnish remover and on and on. Everything is in separate baskets so can just be pulled out and everything is easy to find. Going to start on the guest room tomorrow. Just a couple of months ago I couldn’t get my breath or do anything for more than 4 or 5 minutes. I am 71 years old but back to feeling like 50.

    Have a good week everyone.

This week turned out differently, family dynamics meant a daughter back in hosp with horrid chest and as she has been diagnosed already with bronchiectasis, they had to deal with it asap. She is coming home today, thanku Lord. It meant the second week of the Easter break was interrupted but am still trying to eat bsd, although confess to slipping…

Merry, good to know things are going well with your restart.
SG, sounds like you’re in fine fettle now. Well done on the continuing weight discard and also on all the spring cleaning.
Smp, hope your daughter is fully recovered soon. I’m sure you’ll be helping to take care of her, but be sure to look after yourself too.

This will be my final check in before we begin our road trip tomorrow. Didn’t quite get to where I hoped to be on the scales, but not beating myself up at just 1.8lb above target weight. All the clothes I planned to pack fit, which is possibly the most important thing at this point. The bathroom scales are coming with me, so hoping to keep reasonable control whilst away, but also planning a more relaxed approach, with some mindful deviations from my normal eating plan.

Shall probably drop by to make the occasional post, but shall be reading updates from everyone else more frequently. Mealtime, wishing you all a fair wind on your BSD quest.

Have a great holiday and keep in touch.

Nice to know I’m not the only one who totes bathroom scales on hols, SG! Have a brilliant time on your cruise. We’ll be doing our best to have a good time too and I’ll pop in to post from time to time.

Happy Friday everyone, just this weekend to get through and still going strong. Weight is still 71.5 kgs but more exact as before it was 71.52 so just a smidge over. Also been same for 3 days so I am hoping there will be no rebound.

My problem right now is I am itching to get things done and there are only so many jobs I can do at a time. Today it was trips to dump and charity shop after our clear out. Then I want to get some seedlings to plant out – tomatoes, melon, aubergine, courgette and possibly some cucumber plants. I am going to buy actual seeds for radishes and beetroot but not until we come back as don’t want to leave it to our sitters to worry about. Because I am impatient I am also feeling restless and want to snack so have turned to olives and radishes along with some raw cauli and brocolli. I normally reach for cold meats but want more plant and less protein.

Lovely weather and the weekend is nearly here so enjoy.

Very well done with your weight loss S-G & anticipating going on holiday is always exciting 😀
I weighed & have stayed the same this week so quite pleased since we had our son staying with us which always entices me to have a glass of wine & to eat more. My husband & I are continuing eating salad stuff before our main meals but did have some other nibbles as well as carrot sticks & lettuce sitting with a glass of wine in the sun in our front garden this lunchtime. We will be more virtuous on Monday.
I hope everyone is enjoying some sunshine & mild weather this weekend?

Hi all, can’t believe it but it is 29 degrees today. Friends came round to help get the winter cover off the pool. It is 12mx6m and weighs over 200 kgs, so quite a job, especially as it fills up with water as it comes off. Hubby has put the pump in, and after a bit of swearing and hitting with a spanner it is all working. I have been filling my raised bed with fresh soil, 25kg bag but I rolled it off the wheelbarrow into the bed and sliced it open. Still hard work in this heat. Not to worry it will be back down to about 18 this coming week.

Now down to 71.4kgs, that is just under 9lbs since New Year. Slowly, slowly, and not going to mess it up with a weekend drink. Not had anything since 23rd March (hubby’s birthday) but will be succumbing on the 16th for our 31st wedding anniversary.

    Congratulation Margaret, nice achievement.

    Enjoy the weekend.

    Hi All,

Pretty much on plan in terms of type of food, although not that low in calories yet. 2-3 lbs off over the last week…..main difference for me is vast improvement in energy without all the csrb slumps….must remember this as is so noticeable!

    Hope everyone ok?
SG…..sounds like you are feeling much better- did they get to the bottom of your exhaustion or has it just got better?

Well done Tulip, that is a good start. You just have to remember how much better you feel without the carbs. I am the same with exercise, I feel great and it only takes half an hour so I should do it every day.

You ask how I got my energy back. First of all, a brief history. My condition was discovered in September 2022 and from then it was no exercise until it was operated on in January 2023 – spent 3 months having dopplers, MRI, specialist consultations etc.. After the op I wasn’t allowed to do anything for 3 months and still had quite a wound after that, took 6 months to heal. So that is about 9 months of inactivity so that was bound to affect me. I started in January with chair yoga, then moved to easy mat yoga for oldies. Then one day the Youtube wouldn’t work on the TV so I put on a DVD of an energetic HipHopAbs with Shaun T and found I could manage without getting out of breath. My theory is that my body was telling me to take it easy and give myself time to heal, then do it slowly. I was 70 feeling 90 and now I am 71 feeling 50. I thought my life as I knew it was over and old age had hit me too soon.

Busy buying tomatoes, oregano, thyme and some peppers and courgettes, all ready to plant out. Also some seeds for radish, beetroot and melon for when we get back.

Hope you all have a great week.

Hi all, it is my wedding anniversary today and I have a bit of a dilemma. I have lost more weight and I am nearly down to the lowest I have ever been on the BSD. Got down to 28lbs loss 6 years ago and then crept up, now at 26lbs loss and don’t want to spoil it. Question, to have a drink tonight or not. We will be on a cruise in just over a week and we will be celebrating in style so does tonight really matter.

So my weigh in today is just under 2lbs for April and just under 9lbs since 2nd January.
