    Hello,

I’m new to these here parts so please be gentle…

Back in February, I found out that I had diabetic blood sugar levels, so my doctor prescribed me Metformin and recommended I look at the BSD. I decided to follow the principles and rules of what I could eat and stuck (I think mostly) to the 50g carbs per day limit, focussing on that rather than the 800 calorie limit. I have cheated probably about 7 times in terms of the food types over the past 3 months, but usually it’s been one carb-rich item within that day (e.g. had a burger with bun which had 24g but the rest of the week I went back to the rules). I feel a bit bad for the cheat days, even though I’ve stuck to the rules, but I’m worried I’ve damaged progress today: I had a wrap sandwich which I thought was 25g of carbs for the whole thing, but then looked and saw it was 63g!!! Stupid me. I’ve normally been an excellent label reader. I hadn’t had the end bit of the wrap, so threw it in the bin. I’m worried because my 3 month blood sugar test is on Friday, and it’s been going so well. I weighed 17.5 stone back in Dec/Jan, and I’m now down to 14st 10lb and generally feel amazing on this diet, it’s improved my confidence, mental focus and my mood. I’ve actually found it fine to adapt to, but concerned this error will affect my blood test. Should I be worried?

NB. When I say (I think mostly), apart from today’s stupid wrap incident today, I’m positive I’ve stuck to the 50g limit by a long way, apart from those 7 odd occasions I mentioned (and even then I’m sure apart from today those cheat items didn’t take me over 50g)

Welcome GWinch77, you dont have to worry, we are always gentle with people. One of the ethos’s of this site is kindness and understanding. You will never get booed for a wrap or and sandwich, we have all been there.

You are so lucky to have a doctor who has directed you here, so many are sceptical but it is getting better. I am going to wish you luck with your next round of HbA1c but I really dont think you will need it. Your weight loss will go a long way to normalising your numbers and you could be on the way to being diabetes free or in remission as some people prefer to say. My hubby has just had a pre-diabetes diagnosis although not quite because the doctor is giving him 3 months to get that down. Doctor knows that, as a diabetic, I will get him on the right track. He is not overweight and eats pretty much like I do so I was a bit surprised until I started to look closer and noticed the treats he allows himself. Hopefully he too will have a good outcome when he is re-tested in July.

Keep doing what you are and, even if your results are good, dont be tempted to go back to your old eating habits that brought you to this place as the result will be the same. Just keep on keeping on…

    Hi Welcome.

The test is an average of your blood sugar levels over 3 months, so I don’t think your one mistake will have a major impact on your results. I am also sure that your doctor will be very impressed with the weight discard.

Hi GWinch, I have just been looking back on my BG levels from when I first started this diet. Being T2 and on insulin I am in the habit of testing my blood every morning – you dont have to do this. My early results which had me in tears were around 180/190 which equates to 9.7 and 10.2 – so very high. Within the first 3 days I was down to 150 / 8.1 (still very high) but within 3 weeks I was down to 125 / 6.7 which is really good. Also I didnt have the fantastic weight loss you are having – men always seem to lose easier. I now run at between 75 and 90 or 4.5 and 4.8 which would be perfect but I am still using insulin.

Back to my husband, his pre-diabetic result was 6.3 so just out of the normal range but he was also showing high triglycerides and cholesterol that worried the doctor. We have made just a few adjustments to his diet and I am able to test him now and then and he is, after just one week of being sensible running at around 5.2 which is back in normal range. He will have to keep going or it can all change back before his test. As JGwen says, the HbA1c shows the average glucose levels over a 3 month period so I hope hubby doesnt think he is okay now and go back to eating certain things that were causing a problem. He is not overweight so he is happy to have more calories.

Let us know when you get your test done, cant wait for your results.

Why dont you take a look at our weekly thread called one week at a time (then the date). We start afresh every Tuesday morning and there are people who have been here for years with lots of good advice and tips and people just starting who can ask us anything. No blame, no shame, just a new start each week.

    Hello all,

I got my test results back.
Before I went on the diet and was on metformin, my h1bAc reading was 8.5% (69mmol/mol).
Three months later, my h1bAc results were 5.5% (37mmol/mol)… I’m back in the “normal” range, and “no further action”, according to the results. I’ve also lost 3 stone. Absolutely astounded. This diet absolutely works! I have so much to thank Dr Mosley for. Astonished.

Hi GWinch, dont want to say I told you so – BUT….. Congratulations, you have just saved yourself from a life of worry, illness and early death. If that sounds dramatic it isnt, it is what diabetics face. Please be aware that the diet that got you that early result will take you back there so it is important to stay within reasonable levels of low carbing, low calorie and keep this a diet for life. Good luck.
