Hello fellow BSD’s
I started the diet today to try and lose some weight rapidly but safely. I am 13st 11lbs and 5.6 and have a underactive thyroid.
Does anyone else on the forum have this condition and if so how have you found the weight loss?

Hi there!
I can’t answer this one – someone will probably be along to do it shortly – but you can always try typing in Underachieve Thyroid in the SEARCH box and that will bring up previous threads.
Thought I’d highlight that, as it’s really helpful for lots of problems you might come across. Lots of expertise in the history here now.
🙂
Applebottom I have an underactive thyroid (take medication) have been on BSD for 4 weeks. Have lost 7.6kgs, so it doesn’t seem to be a problem. I needed to lose 20kgs in total to get to good BMI so weight loss not quick (despite being very strict) but it’s still happening.
Hi Jenni from the Block
7.6kgs is amazing – well done! I take 200m per day of thyroxin which I know is a really high dose. I have struggled with my weight for about 5 years and I have now reached the heaviest I have ever been in my life 🙁 so hoping the BSD helps to shift some kgs.
Good luck with the rest of your goal.
Hi – I’m on 100mg Thyroxin daily and this my third week on 8 week diet. I’ve lost 1 stone and 3 inch from
Waist- feel like I have loads of energy now – far more than when eating lots of carbs. My appetite as also decreased. So it would seem low thyroid not a issue 😀 Good luck
Hi Applebottom,
I was so pleased to see your post because I am the heaviest I have ever been and seriously struggling due to Hypothyroidism, I have been on medication for over a year now and very low because of my weight. I am hoping this 8 week diet may kick start my metabolism – maybe we should keep an eye on each other’s progress?
Hi folks i am on50 mg levothyroxine per day and have been for several years..i never have any problem losing weight on BSD or when i Do 5:2 fasting. But then i ve a lot to lose! I have an unfortunate habit of regaining weight when i stop following a plan..in my case, thats down to greed tho rather than my underactive thyroid.! The medication should make our thyroid function just the same as a normal person. ( tho from what ive read the NHS blood test for measuring our thyroxine levels is not very accurate,so we’re possibly not prescribed the correct amount we need!)
I start week 12 BSD tomorrow and on the last weigh in a week ago,had lost 39 lb. so far..feel sure have lost at least another lb this week.
Good luck APPLEBOTTOM,HAZE and MARYMOO,welcome to the forums! XXX
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism simultaneously with diabetes almost a year ago. I’m down 72.9 lbs. (Low carb, moderate protein for most of that time. BSD for 6 weeks (until my oncologists ordered me back to maintenance calories for 3 months during cancer treatment), and back on it again for the last 4 weeks.
I don’t notice a bit of difference losing weight this time than when I’ve lost weight on any other calorie limited diet.
As to testing for underactive thyroid, the most common test in the US is for TSH levels, which is an indirect test – at best. In order to properly adjust medications, you need to have your doctor test T4, T3, and rT3 levels. Synthetic T4 is the most common medication (levothyroxine). In a normal metabolism, T4 gets converted to T3 (a happy hormone, in my doctor’s lingo) – but if you have hypothyroidism, your metabolism isn’t normal – and often it mis-converts to rT3 (a sad hormone). So merely shoving T4 at the problem often fixes the TSH level (so you look properly adjusted) – but can’t tell anything about the important levels: T4 and T3.
I take 75 mcg of levothyroxine and 5 mcg of liothyronine (synthetic T3, to compensate for the fact that my body converts too much of the T4 into rT3)
Hi! thanks for your reply, 39lbs in 12 weeks, that is amazing! Go BSD!! I feel full of hope! Good luck to all x
I have tested positive for hypothyroidism in the past. ( I was on Levoxyl and then Armour for years. ) I didn’t like how it made me feel, though, so I got off. I retested about 8mths ago, because I wasn’t feeling well, and having some other issues. It came back only “borderline”. They did a thyroid ultrasound on me, and found some nodules, though. I am going back to the doc this Thursday. ( My period won’t stop. ) May be something will turn up. I have been on BSD for three weeks now, and sadly not lost any weight :-< I braved-up, and made a post inquiry earlier today. I am “Doordie”, if you ever want to talk, or see my post. Good luck to you <3
Thanks for that explanation NEOHDIVER i can never get my head round the T3 T4 stuff ..that helps..
So,not a very useful test in the US either?
In UK we can Pay for a private test with more accurate results..but then Gp may not prescribe a higher dose of meds, shd the test show you need it..so may have to pay for the extra..the test is on my list of things to do tho..i really want to know how my thyroid really is doing..coz tho i can lose weight easy enough if i am strict,i never feel very well and could be the thyroid is to blame,or partly to blame
DOORDIE how did it go for you at the doctors? X
Well, he only did very basic labs – checked for anemia, and general thyroid test :-< ( I wished he would have done a full lab panel, but he didn’t. ) Oh, well, I’m not in Canada anymore, and everything here is “insurance controlled”. We haven’t gotten the labs back yet. I am hoping it will show something.
SAD MOMENT : I’ve been adhering to the BSD religiously. I finally lost a few measly pounds, after three weeks ;-| Friday, my husband begged me to go up to Fargo, to have sushi with him, and celebrate a raise. So we went. Yes, I did eat some rice, but it was mostly sashimi, and seaweed salad. Somehow I gained everything back in one meal! Yes, I got on the scale Saturday morning, only to discover that I had re-gained the 3 lbs overnight. I “cut it to the core” for the rest of the weekend – just protein shakes, LC veggies, and broth – about 600 C a day, and have managed to lose most of the weight. But, damn… Just one freaking meal??? This morning, I am tired, sad, and angry. SOooo hard to lose, and so easy to gain :-< Yeah, I know life isn’t fair – suck it up, Buttercup. Sometimes, I just get tired of “sucking it up”.
