    hi all..
I started on this diet yesterday and my long term goal is to lose 40kgs. I currently weigh 117.7kgs … for now I’m not thinking about that massive goal figure but one day would like to reach it.. so im just looking at 1wk at a time and would love to lose 1kg per week which could mean i could potentially meet my target by this time next year if i can stick to it.
Would love to hear from others who have managed to lose this much weight in a year to set me a realistic expectations or anyone who is starting off at a similar weight/ goal to me so that we can motivate each other along the way x

Welcome bigmama. There are others on our wonderful friendly forum who have lost huge amounts of weight and are now happily maintaining, (Esnecca and Alliecat immediately spring to mind) and I am sure they will be along to welcome you with their warm-hearted helpful advice soon.

This way of eating is totally doable, and to lose a kilo a week is not unrealistic, indeed you may well lose far more than this in the very early stages. I personally lost 20kg and hit my target in just 16 weeks and have been maintaining for almost 10 months. Please remember to weigh and log everything that passes your lips (keeping carbs low is just, if not more, important than calories). Many of us use the free apps, FatSecret or MyFitnessPal to do this, and they will work out all your macros for you. Also drink enough water to potentially float a battleship! I would also suggest that you take measurements – not only of the obvious waist, hips, bust etc, but any other measurement you can think of. Thighs, calves, arms, wrists, neck etc all spring to mind, because often, when one hits the odd stall in weight loss (as one invariably does) these reducing measurements can keep you going.

Please don’t be discouraged if you lose energy, get a bit headachey etc in the early stages. This is quite common, and is known as “carb flu”. It tends to be a sign that your body is switching from getting it’s energy from easily accessible carbs, to actually burning fat, so just power on through and you will be amazed at how much better and full of energy you feel.

If you need help, or have any questions, just shout, it won’t take long for someone to pop in and give you an answer / advice etc. Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress.

    Hello
I’m in a similar boat to you – I started on 30 Jan with 30 kgs to lose (starting from 94kgs). I am losing about 1kg a week. I didn’t have a big loss straight off, as my diet wasn’t too bad, having adopted this way of eating previously. The difference now is that I am fasting through most of the day, and just eating a meal in the evening. I do have milk in my coffee through the day, and some miso soup in the afternoon, and then a family meal. I find this much easier as I now don’t get hungry in the day, and I think it is sustainable. I also don’t fast on a Saturday, but stay within my TDEE.

I did a spreadsheet today showing a 1kg loss each week, but also factoring in holidays, when I know it will be difficult to lose, and assuming it will slow down to 500g in the last few months. I should reach my goal by the end of the year. I have built in smaller goals along the way – the next one is to get under 90kg, then to get under 35 BMI. I think its better to focus on the next achievable goal along the road to the ultimate goal and to celebrate the small victories. I am also limiting my exercise in the early days – previously I have done the diet along with increasing exercise, and not seen weigh loss, which is very discouraging. I am doing HIIT 3 times a week and this is all. Its actually quite hard as I feel full of energy, but I’d like my body to get used to the fasting before introducing more exercise. Once I’m happy with the weight loss, I’ll build up some more exercise. Best of luck with your journey – this time next year you’ll be glad you started today!

wow Theodora that is amazing progress and thankyou for all the advice.

AndreaG good to know you are losing too and i like the idea of a cheat day on a saturday but for now I going to stick to 800cals a day until i need a day off for a special occasion.

I have a gym membership but want to get my eating under control 1st before I start exercising as well as i always try to do everything all at once and end up failing . so this time taking baby steps .

Hi bigmama99. I was so obese when I started that I refused to weigh myself until the 4th week of the BSD because I didn’t want to see a figure that began with the number 3. I barely dodged that bullet, as it turned out, because when I did step on the scale for the first time in months halfway through the first eight weeks, I weighed 297 lb. That was the last week of August 2016. A year later, I weighed 130 lb. This morning I weighed 119, which is in the general 120 lb area that I’ve been steady at since October.

To accomplish this, I ate 800 calories and fewer than 20 grams of carbs a day, weighing, measuring and calculating the calories and carbs in every bite for the whole year. As Theo mentioned, I used MyFitnessPal to record everything, and I soon I collected so many precisely calculated recipes that it became much easier than it doubtless seems to you right now. I still count carbs today, albeit not calories, because I am insulin resistant and I know that any deviation from this way of eating will get me right back into the hell cycle of increasing weight gain.

So your goal is entirely doable. It might not even take a year, depending on how well you respond to a low carb regime. You just have to commit to self-monitoring. If you’re anything like I was, you’ve been avoiding that sort of thing for a while, but if you’re willing to embark on this adventure, that means you’re read to leave all that self-harming paralysis in the past where it belongs. Your goal is everything. Keep your eyes on that prize. Not one step backwards.

Esnecca thankyou so much for taking the time to tell me your story.. it’s really inspirational and makes me think I CAN DO THIS … Day 2 going well so far… ive had some bacon & tomatoes for my lunch so far and going to wait till at least 6pm to have my tea. And im on my 3rd 1lt bottle of water so drinking loads. I love cooking and eating food but need this disipline of only having 800 calories if im going to be successful… how have people react when you’ve told them you only eat 800 calories a day .. do you get people telling you it isn’t enough ?

A very warm welcome to you, bigmama99! Happy to see you here.
Esnecca and I have the dubious distinction of being the 2 biggest
losers actively posting at this time. As she has mentioned, her
losses are 200+ lbs. Mine come in at 148lbs, accomplished
over a 10 month period of strictly following the Fast800, no
breaks, no cheat days, and daily carb restriction of <20/day.
We are both highly insulin resistant though; you may not need
to go that low to accomplish your goals. It’s extremely impt.
to get right into the habit of weighing and measuring everything
from the beginning to establish a baseline for how carbs affect
your weight loss. I’ve felt fabulous on the plan for all of 20 months,
my tastes in food have undergone a permanent change, and
now the thought of white carbs/sugar has absolutely no appeal
for me whatsoever. That seems to happen quite naturally
the longer you restrict them. I guess that’s why I don’t see
any upside to cheat days. I don’t know if this has been
mentioned yet, but even small quantities of alcohol can
disrupt weight loss, and keep you on a plateau for a week.
It’s just something to consider, the choice is yours, of course 🙂
I look forward to reading your posts, and just shout out if
you have questions or need support! There is always one
of us out and about, ready, willing and able to help.
Very best of luck to you. Congratulations on setting off on
this journey to change your life!

Oh yes. All kinds of people felt the need to chime in with their opinion when I told them what I was doing. I heard all the same refrains about starvation mode and how I’d gain it all back when I go off the diet and how I’d destroy my metabolism blah blah blah. I told them we’d see and ignored the lot of them. By the time I crossed the 100 lb lost mark, the chorus of voices diminished to a whisper, and now that I’m far smaller than anyone, including medical professionals, thought I’d ever be and have maintained it for almost five months, none of them have shit to say to me. The proof’s in the chia pudding. 😀

Don’t let anyone tell you what you need to do to save your own health. This is your business only. Everyone else has zero say.

Yes we can bigmamma!😀 I have had to get strict with myself again, I was being a little lax. Salmon fillet and broccoli for tea night. Hubby and the kids had sausage and chips from the chippy, I wasn’t even tempted – world first!
If I tell people, I tell them I am doing a Mediterranean diet, my back plays up, so I say I am on a strict diet to help that, shuts most people up except my gran who keeps trying to get me to eat a biscuit, as one wont hurt, bless her.
The other thing that is helping me, is finding new recipes and reading all the threads on here. I am considering doing a fast once I am back in the swing of things.

I don’t want to miss out on socialising just cos I’m on a diet as that isn’t real life ! how does everyone else cope with it going out ?

Day 2 – Done.. finishing at 795 calories and 29g carbs. I’ve had hungry times today but just drank more water to help me through. definately think the no eating breakfast is helping me to fast longer and leave me more food when i need it 😁

Dinner – Cheese omelette (with butter) with brocolli & carrots = 440
Rest of the cals will go on cups of coffee throughout the day which will give me a total of 40g carbs for the day… happy with that as its still under my goal of 50g per day😁

I started my 800 – 900 (max) calories/ day plan 2 days ago plus 2 liters of liquids. So far day 3- morning I lost 3 pounds. I have 68 pounds to loose more to get to a healthy weight again.
I am doing this together with another 3 friends, we even made contest to see which one looses more in 3 months period. We made a facebook group between us and we support each other, send us tips, ideas, encouragements throughout the day.

I kept this plan 7 years ago when I needed to loose a lot of weight and I lost I think around 50-60 pounds in 3-4 months. I went from a size 12 -14 pants to size 2-4. Of course I gained it all back after 2 pregnancies 🙁 . But I am hoping to now loose again the extra weight and try to maintain it this time. At least I am done with the babies chapter 🙂 so that might help a little.

    Alliecat & Esnecca

I would love to hear how you lost your weight and tips for what to stay away or what will increase the weigh lost / metabolism. Congrats to you both !!!!

Hi bigmamma and ralia – welcome to the forums.
I started on 1 Jan this year and had to lose more than 8 st (53 kg) just to get into a healthy bmi. Like AndreaG I did a spreadsheet showing a 2lb weight loss (about 1kg) every week and it would take me just over a year (13 months). In 8 weeks I’ve lost 33.5lbs (15 kg) and I’m 6 weeks ahead of my spreadsheet. I’m strict with calories and have taken my carbs down to 30g a day.
Alliecat and Esnecca are great inspirations and I hope to join then and be a big loser in a year’s time.
I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes a few years ago so I’ve chosen this woe mostly to tackle the diabetes – I have lost weight – modest amounts – on other diets but always put it back on again. I have told close friends, my brother and immediate work colleagues about the diet but kept the focus on my diabetes – there has been recent research about low carb diets helping people with T2 diabetes going into remission. They were skeptical at first but seem to have come round.

This forum is really good at helping me stay on track – reading about other people’s successes and overcoming difficulties helps me. I don’t feel so alone in trying to do this – I hope it will help you too.
I look forward to hearing about your journeys – I will be on that journey with you.

Welcome, Ralia, and congratulations to you for taking back control of
your eating habits 🙂 We have all ended up here because of an healthy
relationship with food. In my humble opinion, long term success is
predicated upon making these new habits permanent, not some form
of a quick fix to get our weight under control. You are blessed to have
two precious children, and the changes that you make now may have
a major impact on freeing them from every having weight problems
in adulthood. Childhood obesity has reached epic proportions here
in the States, and it saddens me that so many parents haven’t a clue
    about this way of eating!
I didn’t note that any particular food facilitated weight loss, but the
most significant factor for me was recognizing that I was highly insulin
resistant, and accepting the reality that success was dependent on
keeping carbs very low, <20 a day. In doing so, I was able to expect a
weight loss of approx. .5lb a day. The more water I pushed (3 liters)
the more consistent the losses were. Eliminating alcohol was a necessity,
because even 2 glasses of wine on the weekend kept me in a stall
for the week, and had much more to do with fluid retention than the
actual calories involved. Crazy, but true 🙂 I kept things fairly simple
throughout the weight loss period. Planning for any and all contingencies
as well as weighing and measuring everything were an absolute necessity,
and while I don’t need to do that now, I still count carbs each day. I’ve
learned that for me, not going above 35g a day is the magic number
that has provided me with the confidence to maintain an effortless
ideal body weight. At one time, if you had ever told me that I would
be able to repair a broken metabolism or eat up to my TDEE each day,
I would have dissolved into laughter at the prospect! However, now
I have to push on some days to consume enough to halt additional
    weight loss.
I wish you and your friends much success going forward. Diet buddies
sound like fun, but I’d still recommend joining one of the March threads
where you’ll have an opportunity to get to know the larger community
of maintainers. We love to talk about the BSD experience, and there
is a great deal of knowledge and support to be had here when you
    need it.
    Best wishes,

    Allie

Feeling a bit low; I’ve been hungry for 2 days now!!! It’s been driving me mad coz I thought I was past that stage. However, I’m putting it down to the extreme cold we’re experiencing and my time of the month. And the scales took another dip this morning so that keeps me going.

yesterday (saturday) i went up to 1200 calories & 65g of carbs.. The only things off my plan was a costa cappucino & some humous & celery when i was really hungry.. the rest of the food was on plan and i was surprised how high the cauliflower pizza was when i added up all the ingredients but it was really nice.. I will probably wait to have it again when I’m not on 800 cals a day and just low carbing so I don’t count calories. even though I ate 65g carbs im still in ketosis this morning according to me pee sticks!
Janet – how was your saturday night… did you resist the treats ?

    My plan for today…
brunch- eggs Benedict (no bread).. saw it on Mary berry cooking program yesterday so going to attempt to make my own hollandaise sauce too & i got some lovely fresh duck eggs & spinach too.
Tea – fried seabass with veg.. went to the fish market yesterday and got a whole one filleted.
Snacks – humous & crudites.. yummy

Im also off to the gym this morning – it has been a while since ive been but feel i have the energy to do it now.. I really thought eating 800 calories would leave me without any energy & feeling lightheaded but im not at all and feel great.

Yep munchies Saturday was okay I had quorn bolog and home made courgetti, 🥒🥒🥒🥒 LOL I’ve eaten so many of these I’m going to turn into a courgette my husband John will wake up and there I will be a courgette mind you a slim one 💃💃💃
Oh the joys, anyway last night I splurged and dived in and had some !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep walnuts cor it was so exciting, while John eat two twixs, loads of peanuts, you get the picture. Mind you I met him in 1976 and he’s only about 1/2 a stone heavier he’s a very modest eater, no monster appetite
Talking about the M.Appetite mines gone has yours, or perhaps you didn’t have one I could have eaten 4 doughnuts then my dinner and 2 hrs later looking for more, now my appetite feels normal, this happened last time and it’s such a relief, I’m preoccupied by food by in a healthy way.
My weight this morning moved down to 109.8, so good to leave the 110 range seems to be a steady .2 kilo a day, but I am eating 1000cals most days need to tighten up on that now the snows going and I can shop. I’m aiming for 108.9 for my Wednesday weigh in, how about you do you have a target.
Today I’m having halloumi again for brunch with tomatoes and mushrooms and roast chicken and roast veg for dinner.
Apologies for going on I’m doing it to psych myself up a bit as Sunday’s are stuff yourself days usually, and instead of SYS I want a sensible Sunday 🤐🥒🤐🥒🤐 keep up the good work

Oh that’s a shame the BSD sauce is very easy, Creme fraiche, mustard, lemon juice mix it up yum, I can eat it on its own.
Couldn’t trust myself around any thing to do with flour, I’d go into nosh mode, but it’s good to experiment isn’t it. I’ve really got the munchies, ridiculous what a difference the weekend makes I don’t think like this in the week.
Good going with treadmill are you doing the strength exercises in the book, I keep forgetting so doing them very erratically
Keep up the good work 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Hi all, I would like to join you if I may. I have done BSD before but was ill a lot last year so healthy eating tended to get put on the back burner as I really struggled for a while. I have a lot of weight to lose and I know this is a great community of support and knowledge so I am looking forward to get to know you all xx

got a confession.. I had a large glass of red wine tonight whilst watching ‘call the midwife… it was soooo sad 😭😭.. also had a homemade flatbread with some peanut butter …. so my calories have ended up at 1300 and 64g carbs….. it’s still a lot lower than i would normally eat on a weekend but its done now and im not going to dwell on it…. It’s my 1st weekly weigh-in day tomorrow so we will see if this weekends extra calories have done any damage !

    Hi alex49
We are all in the same boat, so we can all row it together, I’m a returney also did it last 2016 currently on week 2 day 5, and going well, I also have a lot to loose so we are in for the long game 💃💃💃
So plan and stick to it, and very soon you will feel so much better, keep us posted.

    W2D1 today.. 1st official weighin
    Start of W1 = 117.7kgs
    Start of W2 = 113.3kgs – lost 4.4kgs (9.7lbs).
I can’t actually believe i’ve lost so much in 1wk .. its unreal. I think this WOE really does work & could fit into my lifestyle.. I will be sticking strictly to 800cals mon-fri and allow myself more at the weekend if i need it but i will continue to stick to 50g carbs or less every day.
I’m planning in adding in exercise this week too as I thought i would have no energy on just 800 calories but amazingly that is not the case !
    Today’s plan.
    Dinner – Salmon Salad
    Tea – pork stirfry
    Snacks – humous & crudites.

Can I join you Mama? I’m fat – 100kg at 5’92 – I need to lose the tummy fat to get my sugars down. I thought the BSD would be hard, but it isn’t – I just need to break the habit of snacking. I have got through a weekend (reading everyones posts it is the weekends that are the killers), and am now on day 6. Reading everyones note about the difficulties of what to do on week 9 is so helpful – clearly staying on 800 calories a day is not realistic or remotely sensible – but I don’t feel I’m on my own now. thank you.x
