According to my booklet (Beyond GI), soya and linseed bread has a GI of 36 and a GL of 11, much lower than even stoneground wholemeal. Being loathe to give up bread completely, is there any place for it in BSD?

This doesn’t answer your question, but rather expands on it.

I have read some surveys on “the best bread” especially one on the “Good to Know” which rates Soya & Linseed bread very poorly. The survey, unfortunately, seems to be based purely on price and not health benefits. There are so many fancy breads with nuts and fruit or whatever you could add to make it “exotic” or trendy. The one that I have come to rely on with the best health benefits for me, (on the BSD), is the Soya & Linseed bread, and at a random online search is only 99 calories per slice, some as low as 69 calories per slice. The white breads, which score highest, in this survey and in the higher calories per slice range, which we all know this bread is a no-no for us. It might be cheap, but the health benefits are not very good.

Am I right in concluding that Soya & Linseed is better for me, as I only occasionally have a slice, toasted? I’m sure that there are other more beneficial breads that are more suitable for the BSD diet, besides the Soda Bread in “The 8-week Blood Sugar Diet Recipe Book”. Any suggestions as to what store bought breads will be better?

    Hi,
I’m no expert but I would think that something that is low GI would be OK. I’m not a big fan of nuts & seeds but I do sling them into the mix if I’m baking for the added health benefits.
If you have a branch of Lidl near you, check out their bakery section. They have been doing high protein rolls (a triangular shape, loaded with seeds). They also do a low GI cob. They have done low GI rolls but, annoyingly, they didn’t have any when I went in today. I have no idea exactly what they are made of so can’t advise on the calorie/carb count but I have found it useful to buy two or three rolls for the freezer for when I feel the need for some bread.

    Hi,
Thanks for that, since I’ve been on the BSD I have stayed clear of bread and other bakery products. I do have the occasional Soya & Linseed slice of toast. My wife and I do our bulk grocery shop at Lidl. The next time I’m there I’ll take a look at the bakery section which I’ve always avoided due temptation.
