This is my second day! I got through the first day doing 16-8 and eating around 700 calories. I also did a 30-minute video workout! I’m Type2 diabetic so I thought I would get woozy-headed but I felt surprisingly well and challenged. It REALLY helps to know you are all here. I’m a busy mum who also works full-time, so checking in here is such a luxury of time for me, but I will, because you are my lifeline!
I’ve had diabetes for 5 years and I really want to reverse it by the end of this year.
Let’s do this together, one day at a time.

Turkish sounds lush Verona, I could eat a kebab right now!
I grated the cauliflower (making a complete mess of my kitchen as usual) and then added it to the pan for a couple of minutes before the final beaten egg, so it wasn’t really grainy. I know what you mean though, it can be undeniably raw cauliflower if it’s not cooked a bit.

Last night I made your sauce Esnecca with SuunyB’s lime juice and my own coriander and it was lovely. I think coriander is a bit of a ‘marmite’ item. I love it !

Bissell do you cook your cauli rice? I’ve not made it for a while I was finding it a bit too ‘grainy’ for my liking. I may just be doing it wrong.

Out tonight at a Turkish restaurant so it will be feta salad and chicken kebab for me. We also ate Turkish on Sunday and I had sea bream but it was too overcooked for me. I adore fish but hate it overcooked and usually when it’s done on a barbeque it is overcooked!!! Never mind better luck tonight.

    Have a good day.

  • Good morning, or at least it is for me hope it is for you!

So end of week 3 and against all the odds I can report a loss of 1.6Lbs. That brings me to my goal of a 4lb loss for the 4 weeks and on my way to 6lb loss if I could make it! Just 1.6lbs to lose this week and I can count my challenge as a real success.

I have actually put on 0.6lb since yesterday as I ‘experimented’ last night. We had guests for dinner. I had two glasses of red wine, the second just to be doubly sure that it really does taste awful now, and it does!!!! I’ve not had any red wine, my tipple of choice, for nearly two months, and whilst it was a good bottle of wine, it tasted really rough to me! Similarly, I had two after eights with the same reaction. Give me sparkling water with a slice and 90% Lindt and I’m a happy bunny. Funny how your taste buds really do change on this plan.

LippyLipid there are many people on these threads who have continued with the 8 week regime way past their eighth week who seem to be fine. You probably won’t need to stay that low for too long before you go onto maintenance. I guess you just have to listen to your body, you know it best!

Good luck everyone for the last week of this challenge.

Hi all, Ive been reading the posts in the forums since last year and lurking in corners, a bit creepy really when you think about it :/ Anywaay Ive decided to be brave and join in. Ive lost 15kgs since starting in October last year ( it was either that or people would start rolling me around thinking I was a beach ball…I’m 5 foot nothing so anything over 56 kilos and I start to resemble said ball. Soooo I need you people to keep me motivated. I havent been counting calories just carbs and every now and then I become human (well I try) and I drink something that I shouldnt starting with A and ending in LCOHOL!!! Suffice to say the next day the BSD Gods rain down on me with a force to be reckoned with.Sigh!!! but not being one that likes to be told “no” I do it again a few weeks later.. This is where you people come in. I love reading when you all say get back up and dust yourself off…It makes me feel heaps better!!! Dusty but better. So the challenge is out there folks…Keep me on the straight and narrow pulease!!!!

I tried the prawn and tuna cauli rice from the recipe book last night and added the same sort of condiments as you chaps. A splash of sesame oil, lemon juice, soy sauce, chilli sauce. And I was impressed, it tasted good and had the right kind of texture etc. And there was a decent amount of it (always important to me!)

Thanks so much for your replies.
Bigeater – I think you are probably right about the need to lose more weight, another 5lb would take me to a 10% overall loss and I remember reading somewhere that Prof Roy Taylor/Michael Moseley indicated that was the amount people needed to lose for reversal to happen, I would also then have a BMI of 19 which is still in the healthy range. I have found eating the snack before bedtime has given me better FBS results after seeing it suggested here and if I get a high FBS I’m trying to visualise it as the liver getting rid of its glucose never to be replaced which is quite satisfying

Suzcaps – well done on your weight loss! Did you just carry on losing on your waist through just following the M Plan? If so, do you allow yourself any treats from the old way of life at all? I’m interested what you say about drinking water affecting your fasting sugars as I am sure I haven’t been drinking quite enough so that will be a good motivation to make sure I do. I’m also doing exercise before bed (40 minutes of step up knee lifts in front of the tv!) so realise that may be bringing the fasting sugars down, not sure if that will be sustainable forever but then again if it keeps me off medication then of course I will. Think I feel a bit against the clock to reverse it in case my GP wants to put me on medication but she was impressed by my chart of decreasing readings so I’d hope would be supportive if I asked for a further grace period of day 3 months.
Thanks again for your responses – it’s given me the motivation to push on and reach that 10% target for the remaining 4 weeks and also taken heart that if they are not completely stable by the end, I can move onto the M plan and continue to see results rather than do 800 cals for life!

I too craved sugary stuff, I’ve been known to eat a tub of glacΓ© cherries and spoonfuls of golden syrup. But no more. I’ve been eating BSD friendly food for 10 months now, maintaining the 2 1/2 stone weight loss and I can honestly say I’m not bothered at all by cravings for sweet things.
I’m not saying this to boast (well, maybe just a little) but to say it can be done! You will amaze yourself and you can do it!
    Best of luck!

  • Dear All,

I have been avidly reading all the posts but this is my first posting. My third week on this challenge showed a cumulative weight loss of 6.2lbs which I am delighted with.

I started the BSD diet on 3 Jan at 13st 3.2lbs and hope that by 21 March I will have lost 2 stone (1.2lbs to lose).

My question is; I want to continue BSDing using the 800 Fast until I reach the “healthy weight zone”, in my case 10st 10lbs and ideally continue until my waist is under 32″. Is it safe to continue on these low calories for weeks on end? What are the side-effects? I have just reread the forward to the Recipe book and now am taking a multivitamin.

    Best wishes everyone xx

    Hi Suzcaps,

Well done on your weight loss and blood sugar results so far. I am not a doctor but what I think is that you probably need to lose more weight for your blood sugar readings to normalize. BSD eating is healthy eating but you may have to reduce your calories to lose a bit more.

I had the problem of high morning readings too and some helpful BSDers pointed out that this was probably the dawn effect. You can google it or type dawn effect into the search box here. Lots of information about it.

Hope this helps and good luck with your journey.

    Hi Nickix
Personally, I would give the cherry juice a miss as it’s very high in sugar and carbs.
It’s the sugar that can cause the inflammation in the first place so if you stick to very low carbs, moderate protein and high fat, you may find the inflammation will reduce anyway.
Let us know how you get on.

    Hi TofiEm,
I started the BSD800 on Jan 9 this year. I was also more of a TOFI as I didn’t need to loose too much weight but I needed to lose a lot off my waist. I did the BSD800 for 5 weeks where I lost all the weight and cm I needed and couldn’t really afford to loose anymore. The problem was that my sugars are still not exactly stable. I have fasting readings anything between 5.6 and 7.3. I have moved to BSD Way of Life and only count carbs now but still have fluctuating fasting readings. I have remained stable in weight but have lost even more off my waist. I started at 97cm and am now down to 82cm and I dropped 7kg. All of my postpandial readings are normal just that silly fasting glucose. I think this might mean there is still more visceral fat that needs to be purged. I am not 100% sure about that but maybe? I would think stable fasting sugar readings would indicate no more visceral fat.
I don’t think you need to do the entire BSD800 if you have reached your goal weight but keeping to the M plan should I think a little more slowly get rid of any visceral fat that might be hanging on for dear life. I have also found that if I don’t drink enough water my fasting BS is higher. I have to remember to stay hydrated!
Not sure if this was helpful πŸ™„

  • Well I managed to resist the chocolates πŸ™‚

I have had a good food day, but a very long working day. Up at 4.30am to get the 06.47 Eurostar to Brussels and then finally home around 11pm. So tired, but happy I have stuck to the diet pretty much today.

I like the one day at a time mentality, it’s similar to the AA approach to stopping drinking and I really do see overeating as an addictive behavior that we are all trying to understand and then tame. The challenge is that you can choose not to drink alcohol but you have to eat!

Well today was a good day, so onto tomorrow.

    Cheers

  • Hi sunshine-girl
Yes, you’re right, I’m not T2 so don’t know the implications.

You may be able to help me though. I’ve just got back from the docs and she wants me to have a fasting glucose test as my fasting blood sugar level has gone from 4.8mml/litre on 4/6/16 to 5.3 on 3/1/17 and I’ve been low carb/high fat/no sugar/keto diet in all of that time.

She told me that for 3 days prior to the test that I have to eat ‘generous’ amounts of carbs including bread/potato/verges/fruit. I’m not thrilled with this. In your experience, do you think the results of doing this is worth it? I asked why not just do a HBA1C and she just said it would be low and wouldn’t tell her as much. I don’t really understand.
    Cheers

Hi everyone, I love to wake up to all these posts! This forum helps me so much to stay the course.

Congratulations to all who’ve had a happy result of any kind πŸ™‚ And especially to those who fall off the wagon and get back on again. After years of trying to shift my ever creeping weight I know what it’s like to hit a blip, then just stay off the scales and give up for a while… then try something new and repeat the process, more times than I can count.

I’m thrilled to report that my weight today is 72.7kg (11st6lb) a weight I haven’t seen since my 50th birthday nearly 8 years ago!

I started cutting out simple carbs on 13/2 but only began this properly on 20/2:
    13/2: 78.2kg (12st 4), BMI 31.8.
    20/2: Start BSD, 77.7kg down 500g
    28/2: 76.4 down 1.3kg Waist 40in, body fat 45%
    6/3: 74.1 down 2.3kg, waist 38.5in, body fat 44.2%
    14/3 72.7 down 1.4kg, waist 37in, body fat 43.5%, BMI 29.5- no longer obese!

So in total I have lost 5.5kg or 12lb, and 3 inches from my waist and body fat is going down :)))
I won’t bore you all with my other measurements, I just gloat over them in private πŸ™‚

I originally had an end goal of 68kg by June which would still see me in the middle of the Overweight category but now I am thinking I might revise it to 61 and actually be in the healthy weight range for the first time since I was 26! Will see how I go but it seems to be achievable now whereas before I started this WOL it seemed to be a ridiculous pipe dream that I could ever get back there again.

    Goals for the next week:
Maintain water at least 2 litres a day
Up my activity- still not getting to 10000 most days
Keep planning meals ahead and storing extra portions in the freezer, it makes it so much easier to stay on track. Hard for me because I am not a good or eager cook

I tried some recipes from the book, they were delicious and easy to do. The most fiddly was the Thai fish cakes. Cooking is not my forte so I was following the recipe with anxious care. It said “add all ingredients and blitz” so I did- only realising later that I had also added the coconut oil meant for frying and it was blitzed into the fish cakes. I swear I should not be left unattended in the kitchen. SO I dry fried them, they didn’t stick πŸ˜› and tasted fabulous!

    Have a good week everyone!

I started to eat gluten free about 18 months ago. For me it was through looking into auto immune diseases as I have 2 already and if you have 1 you are apparently more susceptible to others. For me personally changing to a gluten free diet changed my life – no more feeling exhausted, the disorientation stopped and my skin cleared up. There seems to be some sort of link between hypothyroidism and gluten which I why chose to give it a go. I must admit I didn’t expect to feel any better and planned to trial it for a month. I can’t explain why it helps but for me personally it has enabled me to get back to feeling myself again. As for any link between a GF diet and T2D I agree with what has already been said – surely it depends on what is being eaten instead. For me, GF foods are poor imitations so I avoid them and now eat loads more veg, pulses and seeds than ever before. I have my blood sugar checked annually as 4 family members have T1D or T2D and last month my hba1c was 37 so I’m confident I’m doing what is right for me πŸ™‚

Well done Miss Ziggy really proud of you. I haven’t been the best but going to get back on it as I’m feeling horrible not sticking to it. It’s been difficult being ill but hubby’s got his birthday this week and he keeps telling me what a different person I was and is now starting to eat and accept different foods and our way so hopefully if he does start it will be easier for me. One thing I’m worried about is I have to drink cherry juice in water every day for inflammation and I’m wondering if it’ll be ok?
I relate to you will the hay fever thing as I have to have one daily with steroids and i don’t feel it works so maybe I’ll give the becanaise a try.
I also agree Miss Ziggy that I’ve really missed everyone from here and have been wondering where they’ve gone? Let’s hope they come back soon cause we do all need the support xx
    Good luck xx

  • Linda I notice you are not diabetic so maybe you are not aware of the added risks of T2 having high cholesterol, I think maybe your lady in the video is talking about ‘normal’ functioning. I will watch it fully when I have time but what I have watched so far was very simplistic and more to do with lubrication of the joints in older people and is still advocating a diet similar to us. Then she loses me on how bad memories of treatments and needles can have a physical effect, so , sorry, she lost me at sticky hands.

  • LindaA my cholesterol up to 6 months ago (pre BSD) was around 6.5 and before I started on statins it was 11.3. My triglycerides were also very high but they too are well down. My HDL is up and the LDL is down but I dont want my cholesterol to be high just because of that old chestnut ‘oh it is your age, dont worry about it’, it want my cholesterol to be normal and I am still on statins. Cholesterol is an important part of normal body function and necessary as a building block of cells and needed for the synthesis of Vitamin D so yes some is needed. When I started on this plan it was to get my BG down within normal levels and stop using insulin and the lowering of cholesterol etc was just a lucky benefit.

It is also believed that older T2’s should run with high blood sugar. Why, because if you are old it doesn’t matter if you get some of the other things T2 brings just as long as you dont go into a coma. And, dont forget, us oldies are not very good at controlling these things so it is only to be expected.

If I can get everything into a normal range then I am happy or why am I bothering to do this diet.

    Hi everyoneπŸ˜„
Well I’ve finally shaken off my dreaded virus only to be confronted with early hayfeverπŸ™„ I always get hayfever in March /April this year it appeared very early. Beconase is the key for me…I was suffering so badly that I took a hay fever tablet for a couple of days but couldnt stand the sleepiness! I ditched the hay-fever tablets and squirted up each nostril and now feel okay😜.
Now to the diet. I am for the most part still sticking to this way of eating with the exception of adding wine . A few weeks ago. I started eating a low sugar high protein bar during my morning tea break but have now decided I really don’t need it. I eat breakfast at 6:00 and was eating the protein bar to relieve boredom and not hunger! So I am back to going right through to 1:00pm to eat lunch. I did this when I started BSD in October quite happily but stupidly started to eat between breakfast and lunch. It’s so easily to fall back into bad habits. I have also stopped eating nuts. I was eating far too much and now that I have stopped I don’t miss them!.
My declutting is a work in progress and so enjoyable! I have totally reorganised my kitchen and donated a lot of items to our local charity shop. I had a linen cupboard full of sheets, pillow cases etc and have thrown out so many random and spare bed linen. The upside to all this clearing is that my house is starting to become easier to keep tidy. Which was my main aim. I work four days a week and as I am getting older work and house work was becoming harder! I really had to do something. I just didn’t want to spend a lot of time catching up with housework on my days off. I still have a long way to go but it’s all working out well.
I hope you are well. Our posts seem less frequent at the moment . Please let’s keep this going as reading all of your posts have been a great motivator πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

  • Hi sunshine-girl
Cholesterol has been established not to be the problem they once thought it was.
As we get older, it is recommended that our cholesterol go a bit higher to help protect us. My total cholesterol is 6.3 but my triglycerides are 0.5 (range 0.5-1.7 the lower the better) and HDL 2.8 (range 1.0-2.0 the higher the better) and my doctor is thrilled! She just brushed off the 6.3 when I brought it up and said the total is irrelevant these days.

I haven’t actually posted since my first one back at the beginning of this group but I’ve still been coming on here every day. I technically started my change in diet on 31 January and then I switched to the 800 cal diet on 20 February. So far I’ve lost 2 stone 1 pound and I’m feeling so much better. I haven’t really found it hard to cut out sugar and biscuits and cakes etc but I have to say the last two days I’ve been absolutely starving! It’s funny because up until this point 800 calories a day really hasn’t been a problem. But for some reason yesterday and today I’ve just felt as if I haven’t been able to eat anywhere near enough to stop me feeling hungry. But I’ve kept going and I’m going to keep going. I just keep thinking about that prediabetes moment in my last health check. I am enjoying the diet and enjoying exercising again. It’s nice to be able to walk up the stairs and not be out of breath!

    Hi SunnyB & cmawp,
Thanks for your kind words of support. Sorry to hear that you’ve both had struggles this past week.

I know I’ve just got to keep plugging away at this weight loss game πŸ™‚ It was so much easier years ago – drop a stone in a month, job done, those were the days! It is more difficult as you get older. This is a long-term thing – I can’t complain when I know that I lost 2 & 1/2 stone last year and have managed to keep most of it off. I’m still aiming to reach 9.5stone – I chose that as it was a weight that I had been for a good while several years ago & it is exactly 3st less than my start weight. When I used the NHS BMI calculator it tells me that the Healthy range for someone of my height (5′ 3″) is anywhere between 7st6lb and 10st 2lb – so my target of 9.5st is actually towards the upper end of the range so I feel it is achievable. Certainly not aiming for the lower end of the range!

Anyway, keep at it, our bodies will co-operate at some point!

Like Mark Twain said, there are three types of lies. Lies, damn lies and statistics πŸ˜‰

The Harvard research is a solid study, but correlation does not necessarily imply causation. Just because statistically, people eating GF has a higher risk of T2 it doesn’t have to be the lack of gluten that’s the problem. There could be a number of different reasons for this result. Maybe the lack of fiber or the added fructose in GF products, or other underlying medical conditions.

A otherwise healthy person eating a balanced, unprocessed GF diet does not necessarily have a higher risk of T2. But the research might have touched something important. How utterly crap most GF products on the shelf are.

Fingers x’d for Mariette tomorrow weigh in – I wish the weight was falling off the rest as fast as the boobs!
Kv – 3 inches in 3 weeks that’s brilliant – hope your son is feeling better and starting to run circles around you (keeps you running after him – exercise – haha).
WooHoo Apple -the wooosh begins! As I said before we wont be able to call you apple for long – but can’t think of a fruit with the shape we want – any suggestions?
Helly – amazing!!!! are you sticking to the diet 100% – my downfall is my cappuccino in the mornings can’t function without it although I still call it that it’s more like a measly version of it.
We’re doing great nearly halfway there – I just got to get through Paddy’s Day without a major hiccup πŸ™‚

  • Krysia, I’ve been very busy all weekend and have been itching to find time to read about your story – will do that today, hopefully. I just wanted to share a little – actually HUGE success I had this weekend. I had to go to a family party yesterday – these gatherings are usually carb and sugar laden affairs so I knew in advance what to expect. However, they asked me to bring what they call, “my signature sandwiches” these are those tiny little triangular, crust-less tea sandwiches that you all know about – however, they’re a big deal here in the US and everybody loves them when I make them for my annual Christmas Tea (another sugar/carb laden affair that will need to change a bit this year). Anyway, I purchased three loaves of premium white bread at my local bread bakery and proceeded to make egg-salad and tuna-salad sandwiches. I thought it was going to be nearly impossible to stop myself from eating them. But it wasn’t – I had a T of the egg-salad and tuna-salad before I started and then told myself I was cutting up tiny little toxic triangles. It worked – I didn’t eat a bite – though, more than once, I had to stop my hand from automatically wandering to my mouth with a piece of crust!!
Then, at the party, I ate lots of broccoli and cherry tomatoes and a few baby carrots. I drank water, tea and 1 cup of coffee. The only thing missing was protein, so, next time I go to one of these things, I’m bringing turkey/cheese/hummus roll-ups.
Zobo, I think Lio is probably spot on – you lost a lot the first week and you’ve confused your body – it’ll figure things out and you’ll start losing again – did you measure at the start? You could be losing inches – Linda A says it’s possible to not lose weight but still to lose inches. Check it out!!
Oops – work just picked up again – gotta go!

I think what it says is that one of the side effects of a gluten-free diet is an increased risk of T2D. It’s a bit like the debate on here that if you didn’t have blood sugar problems why would you do BSD800?

All diets have pro’s and cons and I guess it’s down to the individual.

I’m getting really puzzled here – any views as to whether the Harvard research is actually credible? In simple terms (I’m a simple soul) it says if you are not suffering from coleiac problems, the gluten free fad is not good. Yes? No?

  • I have upped my exercise level over the last few years – my wife is disabled, and whereas in the ‘good old days’ we used to love hill walking, often covering 15 miles or so a day, now she can scarcely manage a 100 yards on average. Also her disability means that I can’t leave her alone for more than the minimum time needed for a basic shop and the like. To alleviate the boredom on the treadmill I listen to music on my MP3 player.
I’m not trying to knock the levels of water that folk are drinking – it’s just that it is so far removed from my own experience that I find it hard to understand. And, to be fair, I have never experineced the symptoms generally described as indicating dehydration.

  • Great news about the results sunshine-girl, I hope your doctor is impressed.

I weighed in this morning (have been on Monday weigh-in since getting back from my week in Cornwall, although I will do a final Tuesday weigh-in as well when the challenge ends) and I was up over half a stone since I got back from my holiday, and on review I know exactly why. It can’t be fat, but the carbs didn’t so much creep up this week as mugged me and ran off cackling. I had a full blown wine fuelled munchies session on Saturday night, total calories weren’t hugely over except for that day, which was probably a good thousand over TDEE, but my ankles show water on them again, with those tell tale stripes where the sock elastic goes, and I feel kind of soggy and bloated. So this week it is still no logging and only weekly weighing for the challenge, but adding 16:8 fasting every day (12:30 – 8:30 window) only two meals and one snack WITH NO GOING BACK TO THE FRIDGE FOR SECONDS. Hopefully this, along with a renewed focus on avoiding some white stuff which had crept in and is probably behind everything from the water bloat to the extended picking sessions, will see the weight back off as quickly as it arrived.
